Elaine started walking down the simple dirt path that wound throughout the kingdom of dreams. For now, her path followed the river. Elaine allowed herself to relax and enjoy the peaceful and beautiful scenery around her. The river gurgled and bubbled cheerfully as it flowed along its winding path. The sun shone down happily and a gentle breeze kept the heat comfortable. A few birds sang merrily, and butterflies flitted here and there as Elaine made her way down the path.
She walked for a few hours, going at a brisk but not uncomfortable pace. Soon, she grew hungry and tired, and looked about to find a place to stop and rest for awhile. She decided to stop by a large boulder that was next to the river. She walked over, kicking off her shoes and dipping her feet into the beautifully cool water and leaning back against the rock. She took off the backpack the Lady of Dreams had given to her and studied it closely. It had been light, she had hardly noticed it on her back through all the hours she had walked. She opened it, confirming her suspicions. The backpack was empty.
Elaine sighed. The Lady had said the backpack would give her anything she needed, but it was empty. Remembering The Lady’s instructions on ‘dreaming what you desire’, Elaine decided to try one more thing. She closed the backpack again and set it in her lap, placing a tentative hand on either side of it. Closing her eyes, Elaine allowed herself to dream of a feast. A picnic blanket spread out before her, with a basket of peaches, a bowl of cheese, and a nice hunk of bread. She felt her hands tingle and the backpack grow warm. When she opened her eyes, she saw before her exactly what she had imagined. A purple and white checked picnic blanket spread before her, with peaches, cheese, and bread exactly as she had envisioned. The backpack grew slightly heavier and, opening it once more, Elaine found a small wooden cutting board and a knife. She smiled as she laid them out in front of her, anticipating the delicious feast she had dreamed up.
Following her small but satisfying picnic, Elaine picked up the backpack once more. She envisioned all of the items used for the picnic disappearing. She gave a small but triumphant smile as the picnic disappeared in a soft shimmer of light. Elaine set the backpack down beside her and laid down, her feet still dangling in the water. The sun was setting and she decided she would go no further today. She closed her eyes, and let the peaceful tranquility of her surroundings lull her into a blissful sleep.
In what seemed like only a few minutes, Elaine was awakened by the warmth of the sun shining down on her face. She blinked and sat up, feeling surprisingly rested and refreshed. She quickly gathered her things, eating a leftover peach from the backpack and washing her face with the cool river water. She then stood, and began walking down the path once more, determined to continue her journey.
Elaine walked for a few hours, enjoying the scenery around her. As she walked, she began to hum a merry little tune. She smiled as she hummed and walked along. Adventures, she was finding out, were very pleasant things. So she carried on like that for some time until she saw a beautiful blossoming cherry tree a little way up the path, and beneath it stood a lovely young girl. She looked to be about eighteen years old and, as Elaine drew closer, she was able to distinguish some of the girl’s features. The girl was slightly taller than average height and slim, almost willowy. She had long, silky blond hair that shimmered like spun gold in the sunlight. She had a small but lovely face that was almost fairy like in its appearance, with rosy cheeks and big, sparkling green eyes. The girl moved with the grace of a dancer as she turned and smiled at Elaine’s approaching figure.
Elaine stopped a few feet away from the girl and returned her smile before greeting her. “Hello! I am Elaine, who are you?” Elaine tilted her head, studying the girl before her as she awaited an answer.
The girl tipped her head slightly in a friendly way and then answered; “I am Daiya, I have been waiting for you Elaine.” Elaine looked at her warily. She wanted to trust this girl Daiya, but the fact the she was apparently an expected guest was a bit off-putting.
Elaine regarded her for a moment, a bit tensely before replying. “Oh? May I ask how you know me, and why you were waiting for me?” She waited for the reply, silently hoping she had found an unexpected friend, and not an enemy.
Daiya laughed gently before looking at Elaine reassuringly. “There is no need to be wary my friend. I am Daiya, The Princess of Daydreams. My Aunt Irelissa has sent me to accompany you on your journey. She thought you might like a friend.” The princess smiled hopefully.
Elaine smiled back, relieved. “Of course!” Daiya beamed at her, and Elaine grinned before continuing; “How far will you accompany me?”
Daiya replied; I will go with you until we reach the Valley of Creativity beneath the Inspired Mountain. Beyond that, you must find your own way to Inspiration Peak.” The Princess smiled and linked Elaine’s arm with hers. “But that is still a few days journey away. Until then I will keep you company on your adventure."
Elaine laughed as Daiya pulled her along. They resumed walking along the path, talking about this and that, and laughing about small things. They walked for a few hours, Elaine started to hum her merry tune again. Daiya smiled and began to sing:
Pack your bags and take a breath,
Adventure awaits, no need for rest.
Pack your bags, gather your gear,
Together in this adventure, there's nothing to fear.

Elaine smiled as Daiya sang, the song filling her with confidence and spirit. Together they walked and sang and laughed, continuing on their great adventure.
