You would think that after witnessing a small boy fall down, possibly to his death, any sane human would be horrified. But not Paige.
She stood in her cage, looking where the boy had just fallen, her face completely devoid of emotion. But if there was any way to describe the way she felt, it would be bored.
She had been one of the lucky people who had seen familiar eyes. She had seen her twin brother standing just a few feet away in his own cage as soon as the lights had been turned on. And just like her, he didn't seem too thrilled about being locked in a room with other people.
"So the game is nice and simple," the mysterious man said, causing her to turn to face him. She wondered why she had to be there and why that man seemed to be enjoying everything so far.
"What kind of sick and twisted game are you forcing us to play?" came the voice of an angered girl. The host lifted his hand as if he was going to press a button but stopped midair and shook his head.
"I wouldn't describe it as 'sick and twisted'," he began, standing up from his chair, "but rather... Interesting."
"Well I never asked to join so let me go," the girl shouted back.
"Are you sure that's what you want?" the host asked. Paige could almost hear the smile in his voice. Almost as if she suddenly remembered what had happened to the last person who asked to leave, she closed her mouth.
There was silence around them for a few moments before the host spoke again.
"I've thought about it, and you're right─you didn't ask to be here. So I'll let you go."
Everyone, including Paige, looked at the screen surprised. If he was going to let her go, why not me? she thought to herself.
"I want to go too," she felt her lips betray her by uttering her thoughts. There was a soft chuckle.
"Anyone else?" he asked.
She looked at her brother, expecting him to speak up but as soon as he cage glowed red, she quickly learned why he hadn't spoken. And just like before, the bottom of their two cages disappeared and they fell into darkness, the only sound echoing around the room being their screams.771Please respect copyright.PENANAx6ctbynJvm
"The game hasn't even started yet and we're losing so many candidates," the host said in a saddened tone, shaking his head from side to side.
However, Peter doubted that he was sad about that after seeing the way he had readily pushed the button and caused his sister and the other girl to fall. To say that he was sad though, was an understatement.
He quickly pushed his thoughts aside as he heard the sound of someone clearing their throat.
"Let's get started before we lose more people, shall we?" came the host's overly excited voice.
He reluctantly turned to face the screen as the host explained the game.
"All you have to do for this game, is collect numbers. It doesn't matter how you get it, just as long as there is no death involved. Sounds easy, right?" he asked, to which no one replied.
"But," he lifted his finger in the air, "it's not as easy as you may think. I won't go into too much detail since you'll see for yourself. But I will say this."
Everyone anxiously waited for him to continue but he didn't. It was almost as if he enjoyed keeping everyone on the tip of their toes, waiting─waiting to hear his next words.
"Don't believe that you can trust anyone, not even people you know."
His melodious laugh echoed around them as he pushed a button. Suddenly, everyone's cage disappeared and they all looked around confused.
"Let the game begin."
