Keith pulled on my arm, trying to pull me out of bed, “Come on Beatrice, I want to watch a movieee!”
“I don't care what you want.” I rolled over onto my stomach, and he groaned,
“Please. I'll find a gay one.”
“We've already watched all the gay ones.”
“Seriously though, this isn't like you. Beatrice… What's wrong?” I felt his eyes burn into my back, but I refused to look up at him,
“Nothing…”
“Really? It doesn't look like nothing.”
“I promise, I'm fine.”
“Isn't it a like… life rule, that when a girl says I'm fine... they aren't?” He asked, making me take a deep breath, and shoot for it,
“Well, I'm not a girl, so I don't think that applies.”
“Uh… what?”
“I'm a guy.” I muttered, a tear slipping down my face out of anxiety. I looked over to Keith, who was biting his lip,
“So your… fuck… your transgender! That's the word I was looking for.”
“Y-Yeah.”
“Well, that's cool with me… Does your mom know?”
“No.”
“Alright, that's cool. And I'm assuming people at school don't know.”
“Nope.”
“You want me to start using guy pronouns?”
“Please. Just when it’s us two though.”
“Have you picked a new name? Or will you?”
“I haven't yet. I'm not sure how to go about that.”
“Okay, I got you. Is there any other way that I'm missing that I could support you?”
“No, I don't think so.” I shook my head, “Thanks.”
“I'm just being a decent human being, I don't see why you need to thank me for that.”
“Well, yeah, but no one else in our town is, and… y'know…”
“Yeah, I get it. Anyways… Do you want to watch a movie now?”
“No.”
“But we haven't watched all the trans movies? Or any of them?”
“I don't know… What if my mom sees it?”
“I don't think she'll care, but if she does, well… I’ll just say I have an internet friend who came out as transgender, and I want to better understand and support them. If anything goes wrong, I'll just get kicked out of your house.”
“Pfft, she won't kick you out. She loves you more than she loves me.”
“Well, that’s because she has good t- Uh, I’m stopping myself right here because I realized how bad that sentence was going to sound… That’s because she understands that I’m better than you.” He stuck his tongue out,
“I dunno man, I think I’m better than you.” I followed him out to the couch, and he searched something on his phone, before going onto Netflix, and typing in “3 Generations”.
“Oooh, it’s movie night?” Mom took a seat on the other side of me, “Ah, one of my friends is transgender. I knew him before he transitioned, and god, he seemed to be a whole different person, in a good way. It really helped him out. It just didn’t help my hormones... because DAMN was he hot!” Mom fanned herself, and Keith chuckled, giving me a side look, as the two of us smiled,
“Yeah, one of my friends is trans, and he’s pretty rad.” Keith told her, making me tense up, “He’s still in the closet for most people though, so he’s kinda having a rough time.”
“I can see why. Since I’m cisgender, heterosexual, and heteroromantic I don’t know it from experience, but from what I’ve seen with you two, being closeted isn’t great.”
“It really isn’t.” I sighed.
