Seclude: to set apart by itself
School wasn’t always perfect the past, but this year, everything changed – for the worse. It’s not that people call me names or make fun of me. The opposite thing happens. People ignore me because I look exactly like my sister. I can’t blame my classmates. They don’t want to feel awkward when they call me Amber instead of Ruby. Nobody, including me, likes to be wrong about something. So naturally, my sister and I have been ignored since the beginning of the year.
“You know, maybe we can wear different clothes to school tomorrow. We don’t have to wear the same thing.” I poked my sister’s shoulder to catch her attention. She lifted her head up from her book and sat up on the library chair, “Huh?”
I sighed internally. How can people not see the difference between us? Amber’s a bookworm, and I’m not! Obviously.
“Oh, you don’t want to wear the same thing as me? Well...we’re twins and we’re supposed to look identical. That’s the fun part, isn’t it?”
I sometimes wonder how stupid she can be in real life. All she cares about are her grades, her grades, and her grades. She gets perfect grades, that’s true, but she never understands the true meaning of living a life.
“Hey Ruby and Amber!” A chirpy voice resonated from across the library. Several other voices shushed the voice immediately.
I looked at the approaching figure suspiciously. Who is she? Why is she here? What does she want from me?
“Hi, I’m like new here, I heard that you guys were twins. Can you like answer some question? To be honest I’ve always wanted a twin sister, someone who like knows what I’m thinking, what I want and simply like can just be there for me. I’m actually really good at identifying twins from each other.” She questioned sassily.
I gave Amber the look, knowing that she was thinking the same thing. Why does she bother talking to us. Did people not tell her that we are suppose to be the loners?
“I-I guess, a few questions won’t hurt.” I murmured shyly
Maybe this is a chance to open up and socialize.
“Oh ok! So do you guys like have telepathic abilities, or like some magical powers that tells you when the other twin is like in trouble?” she tilted her head to the side and stared at us, or specifically me, questioningly.
“um..I hate to disappoint you, but that’s only in movies. I mean, every now and then, we do think the same thing,” like how weird you are, I added mentally, “but that’s probably about it.”
“What a let down, anyway, my name’s Mandy, and I know that you are Amber and you are Ruby.” She said as she pointed fingers to each of us followed by our names.
I counted the white flecks on my fingernails. It was correct. But why? Lucky guess? That’s just creepy.
“Let’s be friends! What do you think?” She suddenly spoke breaking my thought.
“Su-” I half said, cut off by a small voice coming from my left, Amber.
“Of course!..I mean if that's okay with you sis...?” She bursted out excitedly, but then restrained herself remembering her usually bashful self.
I’ve never seen Amber show so much interest in anything or….. anyone before. What’s this change about?
“We’re very boring people, but if still want to hang out with us despite knowing this then I won’t try to stop you.”
“Alright then it’s like decided, we’re meeting here after school okay? In the library. I have something incredible to tell you guys!” She said skipping out of the library with her golden ponytail bouncing behind her.
She disappeared before our eyes like the others who never came back.
