The next few days of college were the same. Learning, spending time with Danny, being attacked personally by Zoe and her gang. We were currently just in science. We had Mr Callum who was a bit of an eccentric. He would go off and disappear for ten minutes and come back red faced a little staggery. Danny and I was certain he kept alcohol in a brief case he would carry around. It was a little joke between the two of us. What I liked about the science department was it was open planned. It didn't feel like we were in a stuffy room.
"Wonder what kind of alcohol he has on him today." Danny said in a low voice as I chuckled and nudged her. She giggled back as everyone else was talking in their own little groups. Zoe, Carla and Paula were over at the other side with Luke. They were chatting as well, Zoe leaning into Luke. Her giggle was prominent and loud. It just pissed me off. Every, single, time.
"Alright class," Mr Callum said, coming back, the chattering slowly stopped. Everyone's attention was on him now. "Today, we are going to be doing a science experiment. Before you all have a moan, I have set the partners for today."
The class still did a moan causing his eyebrows to furrow. He took a seat down at his computer and pulled up the partners onto the smartboard. I squinted to see who I was partnered with. I really needed to get myself some glasses. My heart dropped slightly when I realized I was partnered up with Luke. We hadn't spoken since Danny accidentally tripped me up and I fell into him.
"Oh, I'm partnered up with Mark. You're with Luke, how lucky of you." Danny whispered as I turned to her.
"If Zoe doesn't like me before, she is going to hate me now." I whispered back as everyone began to move towards their partners. Danny smiled and stood up.
"Prince Charming is on his way. I am going to move now, good luck honey." She teased as she walked away, leaving me feeling very awkward. Luke came over and sat down in Danny's place.
"Hey partner." He said as I looked at him and waved awkwardly. Why did I just do that? I wanted to die inside. "How's the hands and knees after the other day?"
"Oh, scuffed but I'm sure I will survive. I am really sorry by the way." I rambled as he held his hand up. His eyes were a nice chocolate brown today. Like brownies. His eyebrows were slightly thick but they suited his face.
"Stop apologising. It was fine, honest. What do you think this experiment is going to be?" Luke asked as I whispered.
"Probably something weird. Mr Callum has his eccentric ways." I replied as he began to pass round the boxes that were presumably for the experiment. He was also handing out paper and some colouring pens.
"He almost seems...Drunk. Don't you think?" He whispered back, leaning in so I could hear him. 'Don't freak out' I was thinking in my head as I let my mouth just talk. Sometimes, it was for the better or for the worse.
"Well, me and Danny think he is secretly on the drink. Noticed how he left for about ten minutes? He will do that a few times throughout the lesson and will always come back a bit...Happier, shall we say."
Luke laughed and hid his face behind his hands, muffling it as I smiled. He tried hard to gain his composure. I could feel Zoe's eyes glaring holes into us.
"You two are probably right."
It was our turn to get our box, paper and pens. I picked up the box and opened it to find a single Lilly. There was also a work sheet of the different functions of the flower. Luke looked over as I stared at it in confusion.
"Alright, your task is to use the flower and your imagination to make a poster of the different functions of the flower and where they go. You all have the rest of the lesson to do this and make it very creative." Mr Callum instructed as he took a seat at his desk and began to mark some work.
"Okay, so how do you want to do this?" Luke asked as I took the Lilly out of the box. It was definitely a weird experiment but at least we didn't have to sit and watch the smart board.
"How about we stick the flower on the poster and then do a couple of drawings of the different functions with a small explanation?" I spoke, just throwing out an idea.
"Yeah, sounds like a good idea. We could take a few things off of the flower as well. Like a mixture of drawings and the real thing? Also, any good at drawing? Because I suck." Luke admitted as I shrugged a little.
"I'm sure you're not all that bad at drawing. Arts my favourite subject and your idea is a nice touch." I replied as Luke looked at me.
"No, seriously, I can't even draw a stick man properly."
"Oh, trust me. Stickmen are difficult to draw." I replied as he smiled. We were having a nice conversation. He was easy to talk to which was also a nice thing. I didn't really speak to anyone so freely apart from Danny.
"Well, thank you for making me feel a little better. You do the drawing then, and I will do the writing?" Luke offered as I agreed and began to sketch out parts of the flower. It took me around ten minutes to do them and was on the last one. During that time, Luke sat and watched me contently.
"Left-handed as well?" He asked, his eyes never leaving my hand. The funny thing was, I didn't feel awkward about it at all. Usually, I didn't like people watching me at all.
"Yeah, I am. Yet, when I was younger, my mum forced me to use my right hand for scissors so I didn't look like the odd one out." I replied, biting the inside of my lip as I realised, I just sounded weird. It was a true story though.
"Really? The devil's hand, did you know that?" Luke asked, matching my weirdness as I nodded and smiled, focusing on the last drawing I had to do.
"I do. A few hundred years ago, I would have been sacrificed." I said in a serious tone as he nodded and handed me the colours for colouring the drawings in.
"Very true. Want me to help colour these in?" Luke offered as I agreed and took the green out to colour the stem. "You trust me?"
I looked up at him. He had taken me by surprise at how serious his tone was. His eyes were slightly intense, like there was no one else in the room but us. A minute ago, we were just joking with each other.
"To colour the drawings in? Yeah, I do." Is all I could reply to him. His eyes soften as he broke the stare and began to colour in. I did the same, wondering why he was so serious all of a sudden and over something as small as colouring in.
Definitely Interesting.
[Authors note- We actually did have a teacher in school who we were CONVINCED he was sneaking off and having a swig of alcohol. True story.]
