Ten years earlier

I walked the long, plain halls of the Mountain Dragon palace. I am a typical five year old, with my claws not full sized yet and a short, annoying tail. In human years (That's what they called themselves according to Blindspear, my friend), I would be ten years old today. And why do I say today? Because today is my HATCHING DAY! ... I sound more enthusiastic then what I imagined. Today was just as utterly boring as any other day. Oh, and I forgot to mention one teeny, tiny thing. I'm the Queen's niece. OH!!! I also forgot another thing; my name is Lion. Apparently I'm named after The All Great and Majestic and Noble Queen Lion that freed us from the rule of the Air Dragon Queen, some three-hundred-and-fifty million years ago, but every time I hear my name, I think of mountain lions. I think I have far too many spikes on my snout to look like a mountain lion, at least I think. Plus, I have two wings, and no INFERIOR mountain lion has wings, at least as far as I know of.
"OUCH!!! Watch it, Lion the Moody," A voice said. I looked up and saw I had walked into my older brother, Wingslasher. "I TOLD YOU TO STOP CALLING ME THAT, SLASHER THE USELESS!!!" I bellowed at him. He snorted and strolled past me, purposely and successfully whacking me in the face with his three wings on the left side of his body. He had done that ever since he got his other two pairs of wings. And honestly, I'm looking forward for when I turn ten and my other four wings develop. It will be fun playing Whack-a-Slasher with my wings. For now, though, I can only annoy him by calling him Slasher, which in his opinion, sounds like a very Air Dragon name. At least I don't have to develop fire as well. Life without fire would be boring, and I mean boring with a capital 'B' I roll my eyes and keep walking. I don't actually know where I'm going, but Blindspear's corridor is up ahead so perhaps I'll go to her family's assigned quarters.
I reach Blindspear's door. It looks just the same as any other door, with three stars on it indicating that they were in the Third Line.* I knocked on the door and Blindspear's mother, Cliff, opened the door. She bowed her head in respect once she saw me. " Your Highness," She said. I sighed. I told her to not to call me that because it made me sound like an arrogant puffer fish. "I told you to stop calling me that." Cliff nodded. "I'm guessing your here to see Blindspear, yes?" She asked. I nod my head and she moves out of the way so I can come in. I thank her and walk to the hallway that led out of the kitchen to Blindspear's room. I get to her door and knock. It doesn't open. I knock again, harder this time. The door looks like it's laughing at my efforts to get Blindspear out. "Blindspear?" I say. I sigh, then yell "BLINDSPEAR! LET ME IN!" If your wondering why I don't just open the door, it's because Blindspear has this big lock on her door that even the hottest fire couldn't melt. I hear the door unlock and it opens. Blindspears face lights up when she sees me. "Lion, hey! Happy birthday!" She said. " Sup." I say. She opens the door wide so I can come in.
Blindspears room has been a mess for as long as I can remember. There has always been parts of robots, grains of sand, her 'rock collection' and lots of other things strewn across the floor. Today was no exception. I walk in, carefully avoiding a pile of paper with a crushed mango on top of it. Why does Blindspear even have a mango? Mountain Dragons eat meat, not fruit. I make a personal reminder to never go into Blindspears room again until she cleans that mango up. At least Blindspear wasn't boring, like the other dragonets that I'm 'allowed' to be friends with, like Sap or Gull. "I got you a pressie!" Blindspear said happily. Of course, I already got tons of presents this morning, but they meant nothing to me. They were worthless, already made things that would have cost lots of gold, while Blindspears presents are made by her and actually mean something to me. She looks around confused. "I swear it was on my desk just a moment ago," Blindspear is very forgetful. she looks under her bed. "Aha!" She exclaimed as she pulled out a rectangle box with the flaps taped up. " Open It!" She says as she hands it to me. I use my talons to cut the tape. Inside there are three lollipops, a very beautiful shiny red stone, a drawing and a card. I open the card first. It looks like it was folded from a regular piece of paper. Inside it says:
Dear lion,
I hope you have a wonderful, awesome, fantastic, amazing birthday. You are the best friend I ever could have had. I don't like your brother. Hes so annoying. LOL;)
From, Blindspear
I smile and put the card down. I pull out the drawing. It was a beautiful picture of me and Blindspear flying side by side over the palace. She really was a talented artist. i look up and say "This is really cool, thank you." She smiles proudly. "That took a week to complete." She says. I'm honestly surprised. I couldn't draw this in a month, let alone a week and it still wouldn't look this good. "Wow. You should make drawings and sell them. You could get a ton of gold if you did requests." Blindspear shrugged. "Nah. If they want a picture, they should draw it themselves. Plus, I don't have the time to do that, with all the homework Magma gives us." I laugh. Blindspear doesn't like school and she never does her homework that any of the teachers give us. "You don't have time to draw? Well, excuse me if I'm wrong, but, you skip Magma's class everyday, so you don't get her homework." Blindspear huffed. "Why do you notice so many things? You should be a spy; you could notice what they're doing while you hide in the shadows." I shake my head. "Wanna go for a walk?" I ask. Blindspear smiles. "Sure. "
