"Please, sit down and let's have a chat. We have much to discuss." Gave a voice that sounded of a woman. In the dim light I saw in the room a small round wooden table with two wooden chairs and a single petrol-lamp buring that gave the smell away in the air. Besides the petrol I scented another scent in the air, not far. A perfume, due to the sweetness undoubtedly a woman's. Suddenly I heard faint steps of sturdy boots. Soon beside the table stood a tall, young, woman with short, black, curls to her slim shoulders and big, dark eyes looking at me.682Please respect copyright.PENANARScBsc41K8
She took a seat and waited patiently for me.
Slowly and cautiously I walked up and took the other seat, facing her. I recognised she had her lips coloured in dark red, darker than wine. She was pretty to look at but I have no interests in women nor any other relationship. I am what few people say, 'a lone wolf'.
"Many people know me under the name 'Magpie' for stealing and smuggling jewellery but my real name is Vida Bentton." Began Vida, her eyes wandering between me and the lamp.
The Vida Bentton who has gone missing four months ago? She was all along the 'Magpie'! Naturally, how could I have known when I have never met her or seen her till now?
"You seem surprised." She noted.
My face is giving it away! "Not seem, I am surprised. But why do you need my help when you know I am trying to catch you? Me, a detective."
"I'll come to the point. Few days ago, I got an offer by a man under the name Gonzo Morales. He offered me a very generous sum of money that suspose to be untraceable, if I would work for him and him meaning a gang. A gang you have been chasing for quite a while, Detective Menard. The mafias." She explained.
The mafias! I have been chasing them for years that I have lost count and they know my darkest secret what makes things more difficult than it usually is with other criminals.
"In order to join them I only had to take the money and fullfill a task or rather as they put it, a favour. The task I have to do is steal a large amount of watches from the jewellery shop Omega in Zurich, Switzerland and if you would interferre I should simply kill you. I am only a simple thief and not a murderer! The Mafias are forcing me into this position! I don't want to kill!"
If she only knew what I am, it would be extremely difficult to kill me. Strangely, they know my secret yet why do they force her to steal and kill me? They are trying to kill her! In some way she stands in the way. In the way to what? What are the Mafias after? Watches? "I see the picture Miss Bentton but did you in some time steal something from the Mafia's? Or stole something that some other thief was after?"
She blinked surprised at me. "I stole diamonds in Boston and there I had with my men a little interferance. Do you believe they were from the Mafia gang?"
"I'm afraid so. They are pushing you into a trap what will snap dead at one end like a mousetrap. A good thing you summoned me before it will be too late."
Suddenly I heard a familiar clicking sound and something blunt pointing my spine. "Verdammt!" (Damn it!) I cursed under my breath while raising my hands up.
"And damn right you are detective Menard, as always for an old enemy." Spoke a man. "Now stand up nice and slowly."
I did as he intructed. I looked over to Vida Bentton, she looked at me with fear and confusion.
"You too Magpie." Demanded the man.
She did the same.
"You are very brave to have come here. Tell me, have the others told you of my secret?" I wondered, slowly turning round to see the man.
The man was in his mid thirdies yet he had already a bald head what was half covered by a newboy cap. "Look forward! I know of your secret Menard!"
"The pistol in your hand tells my clear as daylight that you don't know it. Unfortunately, they sent you to your death. I am not what I appear to be at first glance."
"Shut up! I know your secret! And it won't leave this room!" Shouted the man bewildered.
Although I did not see him, I smelled his fear and heard his breathing quickening.
Rapidly in my great speed I turned round and held up the pistol to the ceiling, before he could pull the trigger the pistol was in my hand pointing to the man's brains from the temples. The man blinked of surprise and fear, barely realising what happened.
"Luckily, I am in the mood to spare human lives. Walk out the door and dare not to show your face again or your luck runs out." I hissed and pushed him towards the door. The man was soon out of sight. Slowly while placing the pistol into my coat pocket I turned round to Vida Bentton. She was staring at me with widened eyes of amazement and fright. "We better move on." I noted calmly and walked towards the door. I heard no movement from her and thus turned round to her again.
"Why, why should I follow you? Who are you?" She asked.
"The same reason as before, the Mafias." I answered.
"Who are you? What is that secret of your's?" Vida asked as tears began to well in her eyes. "You react so fast, that I only saw a blurr and after moments I first realised what happened."
I faced the ground for a moment and took a deep breath. Then I looked up to her. "No time to explain Miss Bentton, we best be out of here in a few minutes before more are coming."
She nodded and followed me with some hesitation. She halted before my black Jaguar once we were outside. It was broad daylight. "Please tell me! I'm having difficultty trusting you although I know you can save me."
I dug from my grey trenchcoat pocket my car key, unlocked the door and swung it open. "Please have a seat and I'll explain." I sighed slightly annoyed, waiting patiently for Vida to get into the car. To my astonishment without hesitation she stepped into a car and seated at the passenger's seat. Soon I sat behind the wheel and the engine purred. She looked at me eagerly trying to read from my face my secret. I sighed again and started driving off. "My name is real as you know."
"Then what is it?"
"Let me explain, Vida Bentton. It is my nature that isn't real as you have noticed. Hasn't it occurred that my complexion is paler than that of a human's? My eyes strange yet hypnotic, tell me have you seen a person with sapphire blue eyes and sliced pupils like a cat's? Or as you have seen before, my reactions and moves fast like lightening." I paused. I heard no answer from Vida. "Does the word vampire mean anything to you?"
"Wha- what! Vampire?"
"Yes! What do you know of them?"
"Only what I saw in movies and heard from a friend about Count Dracula."
I gave short chuckle, how absurd humans imagine how vampires really are. But I was no better than them before I became. "All that is nonsense. Except with the blood drinking. Vampires don't sleep at all, some can stand under direct sunlight and others not. Then they all have highly acute senses including special powers and I happen to be unfortunately one."
Vida Bentton stared at me in disbelieve.
I sighed. The typical reaction I have expected...
