Tev looked between her parents and the woman. “Kalani, go join your siblings in your room.” Her mother said calmly. Just as she was about to protest, Lyra gave her a stern look.
She looked at Tev with nervousness but went up the stairs.
Tev gulped. Why were they here? She thought, trying to keep her legs from buckling.
The woman was slim, she wore a dress of ombré from red for Fire, blue for Water, white for Air, to brown for Earth. Her yellow hair was in a tight bun that looked like it was trying to pull her skin off.
She was the Air part of the High Counsel. So, she deals with any Air issues.
The High Counsel was made up of four people. One for each element. They stood above the Counsel, so they dealt with prominent issues for the people.
Like me….
She inwardly shuddered. “Tev, you remember Ms. Arcelia?” Her mother said, making a small gesture to her.
Ms. Arcelia looked at her, her long nose pointed at Tev, and her eyes were a look of disgust.
“Y-yes.” She stammered. The last time she had met her was when she was six and she almost burned a girl for pulling her braid.
That was eight years ago.
“She needs to talk to you.” Her father said, Tev looked in his eyes, but they were distant, and she couldn’t read them.
“O-okay.” Tev said and went to sit on the loveseat.
Ms. Arcelia stood straighter as she looked at Tev who tried not to flinch under her intense gaze.
“Tevolia Nightingale,” Ms. Arcelia started, her voice like venom.
Yes, we all know my name. She made sure not to say that, knowing the consequences that would follow.
Ms. Arcelia continued, “Have you heard of the fire in a nearby Air civilization?” She questioned Tev.
Tev gulped lightly. “Er, no.” She said, trying to keep her voice steady. Tev tried not to look at Ms. Arcelia’s eyes.
“Well, it was your fault.” She paused; satisfaction flashed in her eyes as the three tensed. “They were looking for you.”
Tev didn’t know if she was more confused or frightened.
“Who?” She asked, Ms. Arcelia’s smile faded.
Her tone sent a shiver down Tev’s back. “The Black Abyss.” she said, her eyes narrowed at Tev.
Her father cleared his throat. “Is this necessary? To scare the girl?” he asked, noticing Tev’s tense posture. Tev didn’t know who this ‘Black Abyss’ person was but they didn’t sound nice.
Ms. Arcelia turned her gaze to the man sitting in a brown chair.
“It’s true, is it not?” she asked, as if daring him to disagree. Ms. Arcelia turned back to Tev.
“The Black Abyss is an organization of people who will not hesitate to kill and harm others for something they want.” She explained. Tev’s brain filled with questions. Why are they killing people? Why haven’t they been arrested? Did her dad know what The Black Abyss was already? Why wasn’t her mom saying anything?
“They-" Ms. Arcelia was cut off from a scream upstairs. Tev shot up and ran as her parents made a move to get up too. Tev knew the scream of her siblings.
She used her air to push herself up the stairs. She busted through her room and saw all her siblings in frantic positions as her eyes trailed to the middle of the room.
There was fire. Burning to the ceiling in a circle but started to spread.
“Kids! Get out!” Lyra yelled and Tev saw her father count as the kids ran past them.
“There’s only eight counting, Tev.” Her father said nervously.
There was coughing from behind the fire as it started to spread. “Help!” Croaked Caelus and she could hear Celestine coughing.
Tev felt sweat coat her brow as she, too, started to cough. Before her brain processed what she was doing, Tev was running to them.
The fire felt hot against her skin. It was not used to the heat like other Fire kids-even if she did have fire in her-who were supposedly set on fire at birth.
She could feel the burns start to form but she ignored it, along with the voices of her parents telling her to get out.
Tev reached the twins. Celestine was clinging to Caelus tightly. He was putting her arms around her protectively and she could see the heat starting to boil his skin.
Tev watched the growing flames for a second and felt a rush of fear flooding through her. Her eyes teared up a little from the smoke and Tev barely realized she raised her arms and blasted water out. When she gained focus again, she quickly grabbed the twins and pulled them through the open space she had made before it was once again engulfed in flames.
She panted as she stopped once she had reached her parents. The smoke making them cough more, Rabi ushered them all out and they soon joined everyone outside.
“I’ve called some people to put the fire out.” Ms. Arcelia said, and true to her word, about ten people with two or three buckets each with water came in special outfits to protect them from the smoke and fire.
Tev watched as the flames started to come from the room. A sudden thought hit her.
Jack!
Her special jackrabbit was still in there, lying on her bed, probably being scorched by the fire. It was the only thing from her biological parents. She couldn’t let it fall to a fiery death, the same as them.
She ran back and ignored her family’s protests. The words rang through her head.
I gotta save him… gotta save him…
She took two steps at a time and soon reached the room full of people putting out the fire. Tears at once brimmed in her eyes as the smoke hit her.
She found her bed and pushed through the people. Jack was sitting on her pillow; the fire hadn’t touched him yet.
Tev could feel burns starting to form but ignored them. They would heal overtime, but she couldn’t bring her parents back to life and get another precious sleeping buddy.
Tev grabbed him and ran out of the room. The fire had started to spread into the hall, and she tried to blast it with water, but it came out only as little squirts from her being unexperienced and overwhelmed.
She soon reached outside, and her mother met her with a worried face. “Why did you do that?” Lyra asked as she looked at her burns. Her eyes trailed to the burnt Jack in her hands and Tev hung her head. But Lyra’s face softened, and she led her back to the rest of the family.
Tev looked at Caelus and Celestine, Celestine was still huddled against Caelus. Celestine had some small burns on her arms but was otherwise fine. Caelus had burns on his arms and legs from protecting Celestine from the fire.
She smiled inwardly at his braveness and love for his sister. Abel was crying in their fathers’ arms. Lyra took Abel and started to sing softly to calm him down.
People started to gather behind the family to watch and whisper. Tev wasn’t paying attention enough to hear them or realize she was standing alone, distant from her family.
Tev watched as the fire soon died. It didn’t reach the bottom floor, which was a relief. But it had gotten to Neven’s room and Fei’s room.
Ms. Arcelia told them to pack up and they would stay at a hotel for the time being. Tev was getting some snacks from the kitchen when she dropped a bag. Reaching for it, her blue hair dropped near the corners of her eyes.
Blue? Her hair shouldn’t be blue. Tev rushed to the bathroom as she remembered using water when in the fire. Her hair was a deep blue, and her eyes showed a matching color. Did her family see? Of course they did. And the town! What would they think?
Why didn’t Ms. Arcelia say anything? She tried to breathe to calm herself down.
Everything would be okay. Everything is okay.
Tev walked slowly to the living room where her mother was, flicking out air for her hair to change. “Um, M-.” Tev pressed herself against the wall.
“-time. We’ll give you a little bit to say goodbye and for you to explain to the family while she reads. But this is not optional, Mrs. Nightingale.” Ms. Arcelias’ voice rung through her ears. Then her mother’s. “Fine. Let me get everyone.”
Soon everyone was called to the room. Everyone avoided eye contact with her. Everyone but Caelus and Celestine. When Kalani took a different spot, away from Tev and the floor, they moved next to her. Her heart broke and healed at the same time. They both leaned their heads on Tev’s shoulders and grasped her hands.
Deep breaths.
Ms. Arcelia stood silently in the corner with the other men. Once everyone had sat down and the awkward silence settled, Lyra’s voice broke it. Then, she started to talk about Tev.56Please respect copyright.PENANA2MXHFK3I9M
