In the quaint little town of Hush Hollow, the sun set with an eerie glow that painted the sky a vivid orange, casting long shadows over the snug homes. In one of these homes, a family of four found themselves making a new start. Baekhyun and Ha-eun, loving parents, watched with pride as their twins, Eun-kyung and Kwan-yeong, prepared for their first day at a new school. Little Dohyung, their mischievous six-year-old, tugged at his mother’s sleeves, excited to explore the wide world outside.
“Are you ready? New friends await!” Ha-eun cheered, her warm smile echoing through the cozy living room, filled with laughter and the sweet scent of pancakes.
Eun-kyung, the more adventurous of the twins, pumped his fist. “I can’t wait to learn about everything! What if we have a science lab?”
Kwan-yeong, always by her side, nodded earnestly. “And maybe they’ll have a playground with swings!”
With final hugs and a few encouraging pats on their backs, the twins, along with Dohyung, stood shivering slightly in the cold morning air, waiting at the bus stop. The shadows of the towering trees danced about them as the yellow school bus pulled up, granting access to a world they were eager to discover.
As they stepped into the classroom, a strange chill enveloped Eun-kyung. The room was filled with children that appeared pale, their eyes sunken beneath dark circles, resembling ghosts more than classmates. “Why do they look so… tired?” she whispered to Kwan-yeong.
“I think they need a good night’s sleep,” Kwan-yeong shrugged, though she felt it too—a prickling concern crawling up his spine.
Throughout the lessons, Eun-kyung noticed other peculiarities. The whispers that skimmed the air felt wrong, their laughter hollow. Every time she glanced outside, there was an unease—the vibrant setting matched only by the sorrowful faces of her peers.
During lunch, her curiosity bubbled over. She approached a girl sitting alone: “Hi! I’m Eun-kyung. Why do you all look like that?”
The girl, pale as a lightbulb flickering on its last breath, regarded her with hollow eyes and whispered, “You shouldn’t be here. This isn’t a school for the living…”
Eun-kyung gasped, her heart racing. She fled back to Kwan-yeong, her twin. “They’re dead! We have to get out!”
That evening, as the haunting hues of twilight seeped into the corners of their new home, Eun-kyung shared her discovery. Baekhyun and Ha-eun exchanged worried glances. “How can this be?” Baekhyun murmured, his brow furrowed.
“They’re feeding off us… the living,” Kwan-yeong added quietly, fear lacing his voice.
Determined to leave, the family devised a plan. As night draped over Hush Hollow, they slipped out of their home, nerves prickling like the cool wind against their skin. Shadows seemed to stretch and taunt them as they hurried down the streets towards the edge of town, the sensation of being watched heavy upon their backs.
Suddenly, the air thickened, and dark figures loomed at the end of the road—the children from the school, their faces twisted in expressions of desire and hunger. “You cannot leave!” one of the figures hissed, its eyes glinting like glass.
With panic coursing through her veins, Eun-kyung gripped Kwan-yeong’s hand. “Run!” she shouted, her voice breaking as they all sprinted, breathless, towards the bus stop.
The bus appeared like a beacon of hope, its warm yellow lights flickering in the darkness. They climbed aboard just as the shadows closed in. As the doors slammed shut, a deafening silence fell, and they could only hear their racing hearts.
Baekhyun tapped the driver. “Take us away from here... anywhere!”
As the bus sped into the night, the shadows retreated, howling in fury. In the distance, Hush Hollow faded from view; the myth of the town, where the living could become the prey, dissolved into whispers of the wind.
With each passing mile, the family felt a weight lift. Their laughter returned, stronger than ever. “Next time,” Kwan-yeong joked, “let’s pick a town with more swings and less… ghost children!”
And as the stars twinkled overhead, they knew they had escaped the clutches of Hush Hollow, wrapping themselves in the warmth of love and the sweet promise of home.
