父親的朋友送給我們兩缸蓮花：一缸是紅的，一缸是白的，都擺在院子裏。
A friend of father's gifted us two pots of lotus, one was red and the other one was white. We placed them in our yard.

For eight years, I had not admired the beauty of lotus in my own yard, but back in the yard of my hometown, there were plenty to be found. All red lotus and some had not only two buds but three and four.

Nine years ago, in a full moon night, I was sitting in the yard with my grandfather, enjoying the coolness of the night. He said to me smilingly, "When the first three-budded lotus in our yard bloomed, it was right around the time you and your two sisters were born to our big family. Everyone was thrilled, saying the flowers brought us the good luck."
半夜裏聽見繁雜的雨聲，早起是濃陰的天，我覺得有些煩悶。從窗內往外看時，那一朵白蓮已經謝了，白瓣兒小船般散飄在水面。梗上只留下小小的蓮蓬，和幾根淡黃色的花須。那一朵紅蓮，昨夜還是菡萏的，今晨卻開滿了，亭亭地在綠葉中間立着。374Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡNdV86jfXKm

In the middle of the night, I heard the pattering of rain and woke up to a cloudy grey sky, which made me a bit antsy. Looking out the window, the white lotus had withered. Its white pedals were floating on the water like tiny boats. The only things left on the stem were the small lotus seedpod and a few yellow strings. The red lotus though, came to a full blossom in one night, standing beautifully among the green leaves.
仍是不適意！——徘徊了一會兒，窗外雷聲作了，大雨接着就來，愈下愈大。那朵紅蓮，被那緊密的雨點，打得左右欹斜。在無遮蔽的天空之下，我不敢下階去，也無法可想。374Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡyBbjfTDOWk

I still could not shake off the uneasiness! I wandered for a while, then came the thunder and last came the rain. The rain got heavier and heavier. The red lotus was swaying left and right under the dense rain but I dared not go downstairs under the open sky and could not think of any solution as well.

Mother was calling me from the house across, so I hurried over and sat by her side. I looked back and suddenly saw a big lotus leaf beside the red lotus slowly leaning down, shielding the red lotus. I finally felt relieved!
雨勢並不減退，紅蓮卻不搖動了。雨點不住的打着，只能在勇敢慈憐的荷葉上面，聚了些流轉無力的水珠。
The rain kept pouring but the red lotus stopped quivering. No matter how hard the raindrops tried, they could only land on the brave and merciful leaf, cuddling as harmless droplets.
