I opened my eyes. The constant droning of a man's dying breaths seemed to have disappeared. My ears were ringing. They were in discomfort after hearing the same noise for five years come to a stop. I lifted my hands to my face. Where were the scarlet stains of blood and the cloying taste of metal? The clean bed and surroundings baffled me. A sense of disbelief overcame me. My hands started to tremble and my lips gave way to a crooked smile. A woman came in just then. The door creaked behind her. She let loose an assuring smile. She comforted me that I'm free of the camp.
I broke down.
I couldn't believe it.
I am free. I am truly free.
She took me from the bed and down a lonely corridor.
I held her hand, crying.
I told her I've been waiting for this day to come.
She patted my hand and said she knew.
We came to a white door. It cracked open.
A doctor in scrubs smiled at me. His assistants with their various tools were ready.
"We've been waiting. Time to go."
