"Does anyone else have any more evidence? If you have, please come forward!"
There were endless amounts of police throughout a section of the college and Kyle informed me there was a crime scene within the building. I did get the impression there was more to this fight than many people were letting on, including Kyle. Nevertheless, I was not one of those people that demanded answers from a situation. Sometimes things are better left unsaid. I was stood there patiently for Kyle to come back. Pulling my leather jacket tighter around myself, I discovered that a policeman and a tutor were talking together, slightly away from the crowd of excited students. I didn't want to make it self-evident, that I was trying to eavesdrop into the conversation. I slowly moved myself in and out from the crowd and leaned myself against a tree, while facing the crowd of people. Bending my head a little to right, I tried my hardest to hear the communication between the two adults, from the roaring crowd of students, while I was focusing on the ground.
"Listen I told you what happened, Officer. James was provoking Drew, I tried to stop them both, and then abruptly they started to a conflict. I told the students to leave the room, due to the heavy violence that was happening."
The officer looked at the middle aged tutor, inspecting her face to see if she was lying or not. Sighing, he rubbed his temples and gave the tutor a look, "Please Lacie, anything else? This could be useful information. Like what conversation they were having?"
Why was the police officer talking on first names basis with the tutor? Did they previously know each other?
"I haven't got a clue; because I was too hectic teaching my students. Although Drew pulled some stunts I've on no occasion seen before though," replied Lacie, who almost whispered. She looked scared almost, as if something she witnessed terrified her.
I felt my forehead crinkle into a confusing frown. Drew pulled some stunts? I asked myself. Drew has never done karate or boxing. He goes to the gym but that was about it. Unless he was secretly receiving classes from someone, which I pretty much doubt. I sighed heavily, concentrating back into the interesting conversation.
"Stunts?" asked the officer, while Lacie just nodded, agreeing to his unsure question, "What kind of stunts, may I ask?"
Lacie crossed her arms over her chest and looked hard at the nearly grey haired police officer. She seemed to hesitate before answering, unsure if she should even be telling the truth. She shuffled her feet, looking very uncomfortable before answering back, "Stunts that seemed impossible, like how he punched James full force towards a wall, which sadly collapsed and he broke his knuckles just over that. He looked to say as if it was nothing, although he did looked shocked at first, then James got up immediately afterwards and the fight started from there. I ensured to get my students out urgently out from the room. Seriously Officer I just don't know anymore. The rest of the story is what I stated already."
The Officer looked more confused at the Lacie, trying to understand what she was informing him. He was trying to get his head round what this woman was trying to say. He wanted to ask more questions, but knowing how shell shocked the tutor was, he moved on promptly and enquired an altered question.
"What happened afterwards? Did you see anything?" questioned the policeman, at the same time jotting the whole story.
Lacie's face started to whiten when her eyes widened. She tightened her arms around herself more, as if she was protecting herself from something.
"I remember seeing something completely out of the ordinary. But it could have been just my imagination, as if I was seeing things,” she laughed nervously to herself. For some reason, I felt sorry for her. Something obviously terrified her, as if her nightmares were coming alive. I turned my head slightly, to see her facial expression fully; she was on the verge of tears.
"May I ask you what it was, you saw."
"I saw -"
"Hollie!"
My head snapped up instantly and I noticed it was Kyle, running towards me. I turned my head back round, noticing the two adults were walking back to the rest of the police officers. Despite the fact I missed out the last important information, I was mentally slapping Kyle for yelling out like that. I really wished I heard what the tutor said, referring back to what she saw. I groaned and looked at Kyle, trying my hardest not to glare at him. I took a deep breath and strained a smiled.
"Hey, I waiting for you," I said, whilst getting off the tree.
"I know, but why are you over here?" He suspected, looking at my surroundings. His forehead was scrunched up in confusion, which looked as if his forehead was showing waves across his head.
"My leg was aching so I wanted to walk for a bit, plus it’s a chilly with the wind, so I wanted to warm up for a bit."
He shook his head at and laughs at me, "I knew you would wonder about. You can never stay in the same spot, can you?"
"Nope, so are we going then?"
"Yes, was trying to find about the rest of day, if we should be in our lessons, but it looks like we have the rest of the off," he replied, with a very cheesy grin. He seemed very pleased for once. He looked a like a child getting some sweets from the shop.
"Seriously, well the tutors are generous for once then. Guess it's the first time for everything," I muttered, mainly towards myself. The tutors are never nice, only have their favourites. Favouritism.
We started to approach Kyle's car when I noticed my phone was blaring extremely loud. I looked at the caller, noticing it was Daisy. She never calls me, I wondered, unless it was serious...
"Daisy's ringing me," I informed Kyle, while opening the car door, taking the left side while Kyle took the driver's seat. Kyle nodded at me, to say 'go ahead'.
"Hello Daisy, what's wrong? I noticed you weren't in today," I joked a little.
I didn't get a reply back, only the sound of sniffles in the background. I start up straight away and I started to worry, realising something was very wrong with Daisy. She wasn't the one to cry about due to her bubbly attitude, which everyone loved.
"Daisy what's wrong?" I shouted, getting Kyle's attention straight away, which he looked at me like a hawk with huge eyes, after putting his seat beat on. He didn't start the car, only sat in silence, waiting for the next thing, "Daisy?"
"H-Hollie? I'm sorry. I'm at the hospital."
I stared at Kyle, expressing worry in my ears, showing him something has happened.
"Daisy, what's happened? You didn't get hurt, right?"
"N-no. It's my gr-granddad, he c-collapsed. I mean he was fine yesterday and now he's in h-hospital, lying there, not w-waking u-up."
Daisy just burst into tears at the other side of the phone. I nodded at Kyle, signalling him to start to car.
"Right Daisy, Kyle and I will meet you there ok?"
"Please. I need someone with me. I feel lost and alone. I don't want him to go yet. Most of my family are here too."
Daisy's granddad meant a lot to her. For him to go, she would plunge to pieces. He was around when her parents weren't. I don't want to think about the worst for now. I just want to be there for my friend.
"Which hospital is it?"
"James Cook. I'll meet you outside, I need some fresh air for a bit and I can show you the directions to the room."
I took note she was a little calmer now I was talking to her. Putting my seat belt on, using my left hand, I mouthed James Cook to Kyle and took off straight away.
"We're on our way. We'll be there within 10 minutes, ok?"
"Okay."
Daisy put the phone down. Then it hit me; how was she able to phone us without getting caught? She must've been downstairs in the cafeteria area.
The car was silent; no music and no talking. Kyle and I were focusing on just getting to Daisy and comforting before the worst.
Finding a parking space was a nightmare. Luckily we found one; towards the backend area of the car park. Getting out and shutting the door behind us, we both jogged to the entrance and saw a red faced Daisy, with puffy eyes and a snotty nose, holding a tissue in her hand. Her fair hair tied up in a knot and just wearing a jumper and some grey sweatpants. She saw us and burst into tears. I ran towards her into a crash bearing hug, smoothing her head. I kept silent and let her tears fall onto my shoulder. Kyle stood beside us, waiting patiently for Daisy to have her moment before we walked into the hospital. People were staring at us with sympathy across their faces but I couldn't care less; my closest friend was needed.
"I'm so-sorry. You're shoulder -"
"It's fine. Come on; let's go inside, it’s cold out here."
I tried to give her a reassuring smile and squeezed her hand, while dragging her back indoors.
Daisy guided us back to where her granddad was and I observed plenty of family members were here; sobbing and crying their eyes out. I stopped holding her hand at this point. I noticed her mother was here and noticed Kyle and I. She gave me a small smile and went back to her mother, Daisy's grandmother. Turning around, I saw Kyle embracing Daisy and I saw he had a few tears down his cheeks. He hated seeing Daisy so vulnerable. Since we aren't family and didn't want to clash with the others, we wanted to stay outside the room but Daisy wanted to see her granddad one last time, just in case she answered.
I saw her granddad, just lying there, pale and unmoving, only the slight movement of chest was visible. The noise of the heart monitor was the only sound making within the room. Daisy holds her granddads hand and whispered, "I love you granddad, always."
She was trying her best not to sniffle while trying to have a peaceful moment with him. She bent down and kissed her granddad's hand then forehead. She sighed heavily, shaking with fear. We stayed in this position for a couple of minutes; Kyle and me, stood near the door. About 20 minutes later, the heart monitor stopped suddenly. Daisy stared in shock while Kyle and I looked at each other then back to Daisy.
"No. No! Granddad don’t leave us! Granddad!" Daisy screamed, who grabbed his hand for dear life.
A few doctors came into the room, to inform us to leave. Kyle dragged Daisy out of the room while I was stumbling over my feet, feeling wetness across my face. I was crying. I got Daisy's hand and took her hand, while she was struggling against her will.
"No! I want to stay here! I don't want to go, please. Granddad, I love you! Don't go!"
Turning back for the last time, I saw his face and I could've sworn I saw a tear falling out of his eye.
We finally got out of the room and Daisy, crumbled to the floor while Kyle was too dragged onto the floor, rocking her back and forth. Her mother was crying, screaming at the doctors, to see her father, Daisy’s granddad. Her mother grabbed her into a smashing embrace and both women were just crying.
After several attempts from using the defibrillator, there was no sound. No more beeping; just silence, which was filled with emptiness. It was only the sounds of our breathing. In anticipation of one sound of a man, who confirmed the situation, "Time of death; 14:47pm."
