The next morning, the first rays of sunlight filtered through the trees, casting a warm glow over the campsite. Cole woke with a start, groggy from his restless night. He rubbed his eyes and stretched, trying to shake off the fatigue. Aurora was already awake, lazily flicking her tail as she watched the sunrise, while Elanor was brewing a fresh batch of her comforting morning potion.
"Good morning, Cole," Elanor greeted, noticing his bleary eyes. "Didn't sleep well?"
Cole shook his head, giving Aurora a playful glare. "Not with a snoring dragon next to me. It was like trying to sleep in the middle of a thunderstorm."
Aurora grinned sheepishly. "Sorry about that, Coal."
Elanor handed Cole a steaming cup of potion. "Here, drink this. It’ll help wake you up."
Cole took the cup gratefully, sipping the warm liquid. It had a soothing effect, and he felt a bit more awake. "Thanks, Elanor.”
Elanor took out a map. "So according to this map, to get to the nearest coastal village, we will have to go through a swamp, and from there we will have to pass the Forest of Despair."
“Forest of Despair?" Aurora repeated, eyes widening. "Wow. This journey sounds like it's gonna be very scary."
Cole nodded in agreement. "Great. Just what we need. Swamps and despair. Sounds like my kind of adventure,” he said sarcastically.
Elanor smiled reassuringly. "We'll get through it together. We have each other, and we'll be careful."
Aurora nodded, her eyes sparkling with determination. "And maybe find more of those spicy berries. They might come in handy."
Cole chuckled. "Let's hope we don't run into anything more dangerous than berries."
The trio packed up their camp and prepared to set off. Despite the dangers ahead, Cole knew they were on a quest that could make a real difference. With Elanor's wisdom, Aurora's fiery spirit, and his own determination, they were ready to face anything that came their way. Together, they would find a way to bring peace to their land.
The group started their journey. Cole kept tripping over roots and rocks, earning him good-natured teasing from Aurora. "Careful, Coal. At this rate, you'll be the first squire to get a medal for falling the most."
Cole laughed, brushing off the dirt from yet another stumble. "Hey, if I can survive my own clumsiness, I can survive anything."
They reached the edge of the swamp by midday. The air was thick with humidity, and strange noises echoed around them. Cole, trying to show some bravery, took the lead. But as soon as he stepped onto a muddy patch, he sank up to his knees.
"Uh, guys? A little help here?" Cole called out, flailing his arms.
Elanor and Aurora rushed to his side, pulling him out with a great heave. Aurora couldn't resist a giggle. "Looks like the swamp likes you, Coal."
"Yeah, well, I don't like it back," Cole grumbled, shaking off the mud.
They continued cautiously, with Elanor leading them around the worst patches of mud. Cole managed to avoid any more sinkholes, but he did accidentally startle a group of frogs, causing them to leap onto his head. Aurora laughed so hard she nearly fell into the mud herself.
By evening, they reached the edge of the swamp and set up camp on drier ground. As Elanor brewed another potion and Aurora gathered firewood, Cole took a moment to reflect on their progress.
"Well, we survived the swamp," he said, smiling despite the day's mishaps.
"One down," Elanor replied, handing him a cup of warm potion. "Next is the Forest of Despair."
"Sounds delightful," Cole said sarcastically, sipping his drink.
Aurora curled up near the fire, her tail flicking lazily. "At least we're together."
Cole nodded in agreement. With his friends by his side, even the Forest of Despair seemed a little less scary. As the fire crackled and the stars twinkled above, the trio drifted off to sleep.
A few dragons from the shadows growled quietly. They stalked the trio like predators in the night. The dragons' green eyes narrowed, watching the group's every move with cold precision. These dragons did not like the trio's presence in their territory.
Cole, Elanor, and Aurora settled into their makeshift camp. The dragons crept closer, their movements silent and deliberate. Their eyes remained fixed on the trio, evaluating the threat they posed.
Aurora, sensing something was off, lifted her head and sniffed the air. "Do you guys feel that?" she whispered, her voice tense.
Cole, trying to shake off his weariness, sat up and peered into the darkness. "Maybe it's just the wind," he suggested, though he didn't believe it himself.
Suddenly, a low growl echoed through the clearing, sending a chill down their spines. The dragons emerged into the dim light of the campfire, their menacing forms becoming clear. Their green eyes glinted with malice, and venom dripped from their sharp spikes.
Cole's eyes widened in fear as he stared at the dragons. Panicked, he quickly shook Elanor, trying to wake her up. Elanor slowly sat up and rubbed her eyes. “What's going on? …Oh.”
Aurora immediately stood protectively in front of her friends, her fiery breath ready to defend them. "Who are you? What do you want?" she demanded.
One of the dragons hissed. "We are Nightshade Dragons. And you are trespassing in our territory, intruders. Leave now, or face the consequences."
Elanor got up and stepped forward, trying to reason with them. "Listen, we mean no harm. We're just passing through. If you allow us to continue, we promise to leave your territory as quickly as possible."
The lead dragon's eyes narrowed further. "Promises mean nothing to us."
Cole, despite his fear, tried to think quickly. "Maybe we can offer you something in return for safe passage?"
The Nightshade Dragons growled, clearly unimpressed. "There is nothing you could offer that would change our minds."
Just as the tension reached its peak, Aurora took a deep breath and exhaled a small flame. Aurora's eyes narrowed. “That's… not how I saw it happen in my mind…RUN!"
The trio sprinted into the forest, the Nightshade Dragons roaring in anger behind them. They didn't stop until they were sure they had put enough distance between themselves and the terrifying creatures.
Panting and exhausted, they finally paused to catch their breath. "What... were those?" Cole gasped.
"They said they were Nightshade Dragons," Elanor said, her voice shaking slightly. "I've heard legends, but I never thought they were real."
“We need to be more careful. We're in dangerous territory now." said Cole
Aurora nodded in agreement. "Let's keep moving. We still have a long journey ahead, and we can't afford to let our guard down."
With that, they pressed on, more united and alert than ever, knowing that the journey would only grow more dangerous
