Anxiety

It’s a beast

Dark and brooding,

Always hiding in the shadows,

Always following you around.

You never see it coming,

But you know it’s always there

Stalking you, mocking you,

Spinning you round and round,

As you try to catch a glimpse

Of its long, wispy tail.

Instead it hunts you in the dead of night.

Sitting on your pillow, standing over your head,

Making you overthink everything ever said.

You cry, but it laughs unfazed

You sit upright and count down:

Three

Two

One

By then the beast seems gone.

But it’s made its mark as you lay there in the dark

You feel eyes upon your brain where it left its stain

You feel where its paw had stood, your stomach all in uproar

Your pulse races, your thoughts rampage.

You pray for it all to stop

And yet, it never does.

You go through life the best you can,

Avoiding the shadows, keeping to the bright-lit path

But still you spot it trailing in the shadows,

Licking its fang-ed maw.
