Her eyes got huge as the beautiful mustang reared, forcing the monstrous mountain lion to retreat. The mustang's scream rang through the forest as it tore off, leaving the girl speechless.
....
Her father wasn't happy when she came home late, "Please, dad! The mustang... we have to save it!"
"You can't even pass school. No."
It was his final answer. The girl thought about the midnight black mustang all day. "She was so beautiful..." she whispered to herself.
....
She went out alone.
Her heart pounded in her chest as she approached the mustang again. Her glittering eyes pierced into the girls skin.... but she didn't care.
The mustang bolted.
"Fiona! Wait!"
The girl had already named her.
A rope ran around Fiona's neck, making her whine, as if the earth would crack in half.
The girl worked Fiona that night.
It took weeks to get a halter on her, but the horse slowly grew gentle.
....
The girl smiled as Fiona nickered, waiting for her. She neighed softly and hopped slightly and her frontal hooves, tossing her head. The girl laughed lightly and she buried her head in Fiona's shiny black coat...
Then froze when she saw the mountain lion.
Fiona reared and tried to run- leaving the girl behind....
The mountain lion pounced.
"FIONA- NO!"
The girl struggled to get to her feet and sobbed and the great horse fell.
She picked up a large stone and threw it- smacking the mountain lion in the face. It growled and pounced away.
....
The girl sobbed as she kneeled next to Fiona, who was barely breathing. Deep gashes were along her hindquarters, bleeding. Fiona huffed softly, nuzzling the girls hand gently, making the girl cry more.
