I awoke. But not from sleeping.
There was a chair, directly on my body. There was also a chair beneath me. I was trapped between two chairs. I didn’t know how I got here, until I fully realized the gravity of the situation. It stank. Half of the plane’s roof was torn off, and it was headfirst into the ground.
I could barely breathe.
I felt another arm next to me that wasn’t mine.
I tried to push the chair off of me, using the muscles I gained in the army, but to no use. I was trapped. And I couldn’t breathe. I tried to push again. My arms hurt badly. Was pretty sure I broke one.
I groaned, trying to break free. I moaned from pain. Everything hurt. If I moved my neck in any way, it may snap in half. I was in deep shit.
I can’t die here. I told myself repeatedly. There’s no way I’m dying here.
I stopped trying to think about what I should do. A wrong move and I might’ve just made things worse for myself. The first thing I did was imagine the plane itself.
My breathing quickened.
Closest exits? There’s one in the front. In the back there’s two. I’m sitting in the back. There must be one really close to me.
Straining my arms, I pushed the seat as far away as I could so I could flip my head to the other side. Beyond the arms, chairs, and legs, I saw the emergency exit door. It was already popped a bit open from the impact. Instead of pushing, I tried pulling myself out of the two plane seats. I used my right arm, which was quite alright figuring the situation, to grab a seat next to me and pull myself. No use.
I tried again. I moved, but only a little. I was tired by the second time. I tried again. Groaning, I felt myself move. I used my right arm to move my entire body. Slinking towards the emergency exit, I could tell my left arm was broken just by having it scraped against the seat.
It didn’t matter because I was nearing the door. I gasped in relief when I realized my arms and legs were free. When I could move, I pushed the door open, and I felt a wave of fresh air come in. The air felt like hope. I could survive.
I stepped outside, but it was hard to walk. It seemed like we landed in a forested area, we were surrounded my tall trees all around. I limped to the nearest clear area.
It was warm. I was alone. I looked to be the first person out. I sat and basked in the sun for a couple minutes, happy to be alive. I knew some people weren’t as lucky as I, though.
I heard a seat creak, inside the plane. Someone was probably trying to escape. I should go and help them, but I don’t want to be trapped again. We could be in even more trouble if I do.
I decided to first check wherever looked safe enough to be. Limping back to the plane, I ducked to look through the busted emergency exit doors. I heard multiple cries for help, but I didn’t know who to go to first. I was surrounded by groans and cries. I remembered the feeling of being trapped between the plane seats. People could’ve been in much worse conditions. I maneuvered myself to the aisle.
“I’m coming to help!” I said, my voice straining, “Just stay where you are!”
Most people I saw have gone pale. I touched one guys face, and it was cold. Hearing a seat creak, I turned in the direction of the noise. A face popped out, scaring me.
“Help me,” was all they uttered.
I limped toward them, an noticed it was the girl with the moon necklace. She was trapped between seats like I was.
“Can you move your arms? Bring them forward so I can pull you out.”
I saw her face contort, as she was trying to wiggle her arms free. I knew how hard it was to move when I was in that position, and it pained me because I couldn’t do anything to help her. I just had to stand and watch, hoping she can do it. If she couldn’t, then she would be done for.
