"Grandma?"
"Yes Darek?"
"I haven't seen dad in a while. What is he doing when he leaves me with you all the time?"
"He has a job. That's how he is able to keep a roof over your head."
"Will I ever need a job?"
"If you are planning on having a home when you grow up."
"What job would be best for someone like me Grandma?"
"A hunter." She says.
"Wake up, it's breakfast time!" Hes yelled into a hall full of mostly sleeping children.
"Of course. Eggs and bacon and toast. Basic, but you get used to it." Hes said with a slight grin on his face. The cafeteria was loaded with more people, possibly more survivors. However, some looked a lot more proper in clothing than them, so it was also possible they were visitors.
"Looks like families are coming to visit their loved ones." Hes said.
"All my family died during the event, they were all crushed. But I was at home, playing video games when all the sudden, I heard a loud booming noise. I then looked out my left window and saw a giant foot of insane proportions. I was outside the range, but then the flashback of the initial stomp occurred, and sent my house flying, torn from its foundations, with me still in it. I barely lived, as you can tell." Hes explained. Darek looked down and noticed something he hadn't realized.
"You are missing a leg."
"And an arm! Don't forget that one too!"
He fully analyzed Hes's body. He had a mechanical leg, but no mechanical arm, just an empty space where it once resided. Hes also was missing a finger in his one existing arm. However, despite all of that, Hes was still able to stand straight up. I never noticed because Hes has the bravery and calmness of someone never in danger Darek thought.
"Did you never notice? You really do have the eyesight of a bat."
"Bats don't have bad eyesight."
"You get my point you idiot." Hes said. He stood up, and went over to the bunk beds.
"Do you not have family to have visit you?" Darek asked.
"I have my Grandma and Grandpa, but they live in New York, so they would never be able to make it here. I'm assuming..."
"No, I don't have any family left to visit me." Darek finished.
Another day had gone by, and now it was nighttime. Darek, of course, shared a bunk with Hes. He was the only one who really wanted to sleep with Darek. Darek noticed Hes reading a book, but decided not to mention it.
"I'm reading 'The Odyssey.' Ever heard of it?" Hes could pick up on Darek's social queue's well.
"I heard of it back in my Freshman year, but I never read it, despite a tiny excerpt from it."
"While it is an old book, I'm enjoying it so far. I'm on the second book now." Hes says.
"I like the book, because its entire purpose is to show you how perseverance looks. Not telling you to persevere, but showing you what it looks like. At least, that's my takeaway from it." Hes explained.
"I'll be leaving tomorrow." Darek finally said.
"Where you heading?" Hes asked.
"Space."
"You're funny." He said, laughing silently. However, there was not an inkling of a joking tone throughout Darek's face, or his voice.
"Where are you actually going though? I'm curious." Hes persisted.
"I already said where I planned to go, whether you think I am joking or not is none of my concern."145Please respect copyright.PENANAMmuSXGFhTD
It was Darek's last day, so Hes planned to give Darek a nice farewell with a gift.145Please respect copyright.PENANA7t01uItPxj
"Darek, can you come here real quick?" Hes yelled to Darek from the rec room. "I got a gift!"145Please respect copyright.PENANAm0L2azm3of
"A gift?" Darek asked. Hes handed Darek the carefully and gently wrapped present, while also handing Darek a nicely painted on card with Darek's name on it. 145Please respect copyright.PENANADoJuO8tjMD
"Thank you." Darek started unwrapping the box to see a blue colored cardboard box. Darek opened the cardboard box as well, and pulled out what seemed to be an older phone.145Please respect copyright.PENANAGnGcznH7i4
"An Iphone 20! Thank you." Hes proceeded to grab the box and lift up the bottom of the blue cardboard box, and pulled another Iphone 20 as well, that was hidden under the false bottom.145Please respect copyright.PENANAyj4yyVFkhK
"Now we can talk wherever you go, even in space." Hes said jokingly.
"Now, will you finally tell me where you are going?"
"You just acknowledged that you know where I am going."
"I don't get your purpose in lying. At least tell me that you don't want me to know." Hes asked.
"I told you, whether you believe it is a lie or not is none of my concern, but I am going to space."
"You're impossible." Said Hes.145Please respect copyright.PENANA7KQAPtqNBU
Darek, now standing at the door, had some of the kids, staff, and of course, Hes, standing there waiting to give him their final farewell.145Please respect copyright.PENANAC0fFs86tiF
"Be well!" One kid said.145Please respect copyright.PENANADa9IfjxB68
"Don't overwork yourself!" Said another staff member.145Please respect copyright.PENANAYfIxEmJqq5
"Hey, promise me you will use that phone and update me. Also, at some point, tell me where you are going."145Please respect copyright.PENANALGohlCrtkJ
"If we have to have this argument one more time, I'm going to throw this phone away."145Please respect copyright.PENANAW8t4yFEdBx
Darek opened the two doors at one time, and felt the nice rush of wind hit his face as he took one more step forwards. He felt the wind hit his face as he took one step forwards. He felt the wind hit his face as he took one more step forwards. He had taken only three steps, and it felt like the wind had been against him more than ever. 145Please respect copyright.PENANAKsIwr2qgxm
"Hey! Don't forget, wherever you're going, be careful, because there is an active riot surrounding Washington!" It was commonplace nowadays for riots to occur in areas surrounding Washington, or what was once there. They usually resulted in 40 civilians dead, and usually 10 or less military casualties.145Please respect copyright.PENANA7QpWemH9u6
"Good to know, that's the direction I'm heading."145Please respect copyright.PENANA0nQEx8gO5q
"Thought you said you were going to space." Hes said, jokingly.145Please respect copyright.PENANAf4APJTkJQK
"I am, but that is the area that will cause the least damage." Darek said, and in the first time in a while since the explosion occurred,145Please respect copyright.PENANA3n607WrESU
He had a little laugh.
