Jackie's announcement hung in the air, and the mission unfolded before them: "We've got intel on a high-profile arms dealer operating in the heart of Paris. Your task is to infiltrate his heavily guarded compound, gather evidence, and if necessary, neutralize the threat. This one's crucial, team."
The arms dealer, known by the alias "Silhouette," had been a shadowy figure in the criminal underworld. The mission would lead Alyn and Ryan through the labyrinthine streets of Paris, testing not only their skills in espionage but also their ability to navigate the intricate web of international crime.
The weight of the mission settled over the room as Jackie and John discussed the intricacies of infiltrating Silhouette's compound. Alyn and Ryan exchanged glances, a silent understanding passing between them. Paris, a city with a history woven into their pasts, now became the backdrop for their next operation.
"Oh... honestly, it sounds pretty easy. Paris isn't in too much trouble right now," Ryan remarked, his tone carrying a touch of nonchalance.
"Never underestimate your threat, soldier," John replied sternly. "You even lived in Paris as a child. Remind me again... what happened with your family?"
Ryan's demeanor shifted, and he hung his head, releasing a sorrowful sigh. "The war. Oh... yes, sir."
"Right. Over there, you will be staying in one of our heavily guarded bases, disguised as a civilian apartment," John continued, laying out the logistics.
Jackie interjected with a smirk, "No, you'll be staying in Queen's base. So, be a good hostess."
Alyn chuckled slightly, acknowledging the unexpected twist. John turned toward Jackie in genuine shock, prompting laughter.
"Guess the old brain just ain't the same anymore..." John chuckled, rubbing the back of his balding head. "I was determined to be a politician as a teen. Looking back, that may have been the stupidest thought that ever entered me... the 20's were the best... not a single care."
Alyn, with a mischievous glint in her eye, couldn't resist adding, "Well, if being a politician didn't work out, at least you found a way to boss us around."
The room filled with laughter, a brief reprieve from the gravity of their mission. The banter was a reminder that even in the face of danger, camaraderie and humor could be powerful allies.
"Heh... I was close to winning a class election in middle school if it wasn't for him..."
"If it wasn't for whom?" Ryan asked.
"One of my classmates, Ash. The war took him, not long before you moved back to the UK. It was my fault, though. I cheated..."
"Oh..." Ryan's response carried a weight of understanding.
Alyn, however, felt a sudden jolt. Ash was her grandfather's name, a piece of information she had never shared. The mention of a classmate named Ash struck a chord, and she couldn't help but be startled by the coincidence.
"He was a good kid. Smart, charismatic. The kind of person everyone liked," John continued, unaware of Alyn's reaction. "The war robbed us of a lot."
Ryan, curious, probed further. "What happened to him?"
"I'm not too sure... I moved to Canada in ninth grade..." John replied with a sigh.
"He became a legend, in a way. After his college, he became the CEO of a huge tech firm. His daughter took over after his death," Jackie explained, her words echoing through the room.
"Winters Technologies, right?" Alyn asked, shock evident in her eyes as the puzzle pieces began falling into place.
"I think so, yes." John replied.
"Do you remember anything else?"
"Nothing much, but... what I do remember is that he and Angie, his rival of all people, went up and snitched on me together. Wonder what she grew up to be."
Jackie's gaze shifted, and he continued, "Angelina Wylde. She grew to be a famous writer, but no one knows where she is now. Ash died a legend, but Angie vanished from the public eye."
Jackie's words hung in the air, creating an unspoken connection between the present and the past. Alyn, grappling with the revelation, exchanged a glance with Jackie. The past, it seemed, had woven threads that connected their lives in unexpected ways. Ryan, unaware of the significance, remained the only clueless observer in the room.
"How do you guys know all this?" he asked, confused.
"It doesn't matter... anyway, how was that election otherwise?" Alyn asked.
John replied, "It ended in Ash and Leah, rival candidates, teaming up."
Now it was Ryan's turn to be shocked. The revelation that his own grandmother, Leah, had probably been part of his superior's middle school election drama caught him off guard. The threads of their intertwined histories continued to unravel, revealing connections that even he hadn't anticipated.
"Leah... Philips?" Ryan asked, his heart racing.
"No, I don't know any Leah Philips... why?" John answered.
"Maybe you might remember her as... Leah Woods?" he inquired, for Woods was her maiden name.
"Yes... that's her, how did you–"
"Because... she's my paternal grandmother..."
The room fell into a momentary hush as Ryan's revelation sank in. Alyn exchanged a glance with Jackie.
Later, as they continued their mission preparations, Alyn couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to the Dark Knight than met the eye.
