CHAPTER 6
Oliver
Soon the bell rang, and I started packing up my things. Before I knew it, the guy staring at me quickly walked past me and out the door. What was his deal? I think to myself.
" Hey, Miles who was that guy by the window with the necklace?' I ask him as we pack up our things. " Oh, him? he's James Stone his father is the principal," he said zipping up his book bag.
James Stone, why he would be looking at me? I think to myself as I walk out of the room. The hallway is crowded and people talking and walking back and forth. As I walk down to my next class I see Harper put her things in her locker.
" Harper!" I call out to her as I walk to her. " Hey, nice outfit" she compliments me looking for something "How was class? make any new friends?' She teased. " No, I didn't..." I get a bit close to her "Who knows who's a wolf here" I whisper to her. She nods as she digs into her bag looking for something. " You know you have to make a friend Oliver; we are supposed to blend in" she replies pulling out a pencil " I know we are but I'm not sure who to trust" I reply.
" You trust me, and everyone else you pretend" she states with a smile. Soon the bell rang and it was time to go to the second period.
Throughout the day everything seemed normal. No one out of the ordinary seemed out of place. If there are wolves here they aren't making themselves noticed very easily.
After 3rd period it was finally lunch time. In the hallway I spot Harper. " so see anything yet?" I ask in a low tone. " no it's like they don't exist but they have to be here my parents say they are, we just have to keep a lookout" she replies walking into the cafeteria.
Inside everyone is talking and walking around. I look around and by the looks of it, you can see who're the popular people are.
In the middle of the room, I saw a group of older teenagers. One of the boys seemed to be the popular one. He was a bit tall with black hair... and a lot of muscles. He kinda looked like James Stone. He was talking to a pretty girl to his left, who seemed smart but was wearing high heels. They must be seniors.
As we grabbed our trays, I noticed the guy glance in our direction—more specifically at Harper. His gaze lingered for a moment longer than I would have expected, even while the pretty girl was talking to him. Harper, busy chatting about the food options, didn’t seem to notice. I figured he was just being nosy or curious, the way popular kids sometimes are, and didn’t think much of it.
I tapped Harper on the shoulder while we slowly walked in the line to grab lunch " Hey who are those people in the middle?" I pointed. She quickly looked then rolled her eyes and turned back around " That's Finn and his girlfriend Bella they are kinda on an on-off thing from what I can see since I got here.. they run the place around here". We slowly move in the line to grab our trays "Do you think he's a wolf?" I reply picking up a milk carton. " I'm not sure, I asked around about their family and his uncle is the principal of the school," she says quickly before picking her food. So that's why they look alike a little bit I think to myself.
After a few minutes of eating Harper explains who might know where the wolves are. " his family works everywhere, and kinda rich" she says taking a sip of juice. " why is that important?" I ask "Well it's important because they might know who the werewolves are or if it's them". After we talked about something else and continued eating a weird feeling was coming over me the hairs on the back of my neck stood up like someone was watching me. But looking around I didn't notice anyone looking at me. After a few moments, the feeling went away and went back to our conversation of laughing a talking bout random stuff. Soon someone quickly burst into the cafeteria yelling. " Wolf! Wolf! There's a wolf outside the school! By the field!" he screamed scared. I look at Harper and she nods knowing that it might be a werewolf. " there's a wolf! Right out there" the kid continues to yell while pointing to the window that faces the field. Everyone rushes to the window to see if what he is saying is true. Some people were starting to get scared of the wolf eating them.
A few teachers were trying to calm the crowd of kids pressing against the window, urging them to sit down and stop speculating about the supposed wolf sighting. The noise was chaotic, a mix of worried murmurs and excited chatter that grew louder by the second.“Well, I guess we know there are wolves here,” I muttered to Harper, who was smiling faintly, clearly amused by the commotion. Her expression was calm, but her eyes were sharp, scanning the room as if piecing together a puzzle. After a few minutes, the door to the cafeteria swung open, and Principal Stone strode in with a megaphone in hand. He stood tall, his gray suit immaculate, and his peppered hair gave him an air of authority that immediately commanded attention. The resemblance to James was undeniable.
“Ladies and gentlemen!” he boomed through the megaphone, his voice cutting through the noise like a blade. The crowd fell into a hush, every student turning to look at him. “If you’re not in a seat by the time I count to ten, you’ll be serving detention for not following directions!” he warned, his tone firm.By the time he reached seven, the room was eerily quiet, and every student had scrambled to find a seat. Principal Stone lowered the megaphone slightly and scanned the room with a measured gaze.
“Now that I have everyone’s attention, I want to reassure you that there is no need to panic. We live near the woods, and it’s not unusual to see a wolf in this area. This is wolf country, after all,” he said, his tone steady but authoritative. “You are all safe. There is no danger. If you wish, you may dismiss yourselves to your next class early or take a few extra moments to calm down here in the cafeteria. But let me make this clear: there is no cause for alarm.”His words seemed to settle over the students like a blanket, muffling the rising anxiety. The room slowly stirred as people began whispering again, albeit much quieter than before.
“Perfect,” Harper whispered to me, leaning in close. “Now we can go check out where that kid saw the wolf.
After the principal was done talking everyone calmly got up to head to their lockers. But me and Harper wanted to go out to see what happened to the wolf. On the way out of the cafeteria, I noticed the principal talking to that girl and her brother who took me on a tour of that place. I wonder why he was talking to them.
