I went to meet the girl again last night, she still won’t tell me her name. I understand, being kicked out of the kingdom for alleged witchcraft would make me wary of people too.
I don’t think she’s a witch. I think she’s something else. Something new and different and strange. Simple minded villagers just assumed “witch.” At least they let her live.
I figured I’d meet her again tonight, I wanted to make sure she was ok. And that she had a friend. Of course she’d be ok, she’s not human.
I hopped out the window of my father’s small house and took off towards the wall. There was a maple tree that I climbed to get over, and I hoped I didn’t make too much noise.
“Hello?” I whispered.
Her angelic voice filled the air. “Henry, you came again.” She danced into the small clearing filled with lavender, making the fireflies float with her.
“I had to make sure you were alright.”
”Of course I am Henry. But I’m afraid I will be leaving soon.”
”To where? The closest town is over nine miles away on horse,” I reasoned. At least here I’d know she was safe.
”No where you know of. I’m going back to my home.” She smiled and her eyes seemed to glow.
“Oh, well then. Farewell, my fair lady.” I said taking her silky hand in mine and giving it a soft kiss.
Oh dear, she really was glowing. Suddenly she bursted into a thousand fireflies, leaving my hand holding empty space.
I sat there in the lavender, watching the tiny star-like bugs drift in the cool wind, when I heard,
”Goodbye Henry,” Her voice, sounding like the wind itself, passed my ears one last time.
