Chapter Nine
I reluctantly left Wen's custodian office as a message from the wall speakers beckoned me to Thomas.
"You called?" I asked walking into his grand office.
"Unfortunately yes." He says.
I roll my eyes, dully aware of the two ragged looking men sitting beside him in his desk chair.
I walk deeper into the room.
"How can I rain you with my brilliance?" I say crossing my hands.
Tom looks at me smugly and nudges one of the men beside him.
I lift my eyebrow dubiously.
"Let me introduce you to Marty and Haymich."
"Dominic." I greet to the intimidating but not so bright looking men. "So Thomas, are you going to tell me what's going on here or are you going to keep smiling at me like a creep?"
His smugness quickly turns into a scowl. One of his men chuckles.
"I want to make you a proposition."
I nod once for him to go on.
"You can call it a promotion if you want but..."
He snaps his fingers and the strong buffoon beside him grabs a stack of papers and slams them onto the desk in front of me.
I stare dumbfounded at the hundred stacks of papers before me.
"You're kidding right? What is this?"
"All my scrambled data's on multiple stories and sightings."
I stared up at him with such a hatred that I would have said something I would have regretted later if he hadn't had interrupted me.
"But unfortunately this promotion doesn't come with an extra raise. I'm kind of funding money at the moment."
"How am I going to know which notes are for what?"
"Figure it out List, use that rain of brilliance you so humbly say you have."
A tense silence enveloped the room. If it wasn't obvious before, it is now, I'm working with the enemy.
"Wenn," I call back to where I know he's listening into the conversation at the door entrance. "Give me hand."
I still kept my angry gaze on Tom as Wenn and I grabbed the stacks and walked out of the room. It wasn't until then did I actually acknowledged Wenn scowling beside me.
"That ass for a face, bas-
"Let's just get out of here okay man?" I say through gritted teeth. "I can't stand this place right now."
We walk out of the building without bothering to check out first. The sudden change of events closed out any other thought besides infuriation and revenge plots. Wenn helped me pile the papers into the trunk of my car and immediately jumps into the passenger seat.
"Dude, what the hell do you think you're doing?" I asked arms crossed, staring tiredly down at him.
"I'm going with you." He says with his feet kicked up onto my windowsill.
"No you're not." I tell him shoving his legs back on the ground where they belong.
Wenn shook his head
"Come on man, you don't think I'd actually leave you alone with all that work, do you? What kind of best friend of yours would I be?"
I smirked.
"How boastful of you to have already categorized yourself as my best friend."
"Am I not?" Wenn asked with a mocking leer.
"We'll see." I answered while climbing into the driver's side.
I pulled the car from its parking spot and sped quickly towards my house. I felt as if I couldn't get away fast enough. Wenn tried to make small talk but I didn't hear it. Honestly I ignored him. He practically sounded like an annoying, mosquito around my head and that's the type of sound I usually blank out as background noise, or slap.
"I see that my interest in talking about half-naked girls in bikinis isn't amusing you so I'll talk about something else."
It took two seconds for him to come up with another topic.
"Ooh the party, shoot, I almost forgot!"
Wenn looked at me excitedly.
"You're coming right?"
Wenn was now practically bouncing off his seat.
"To what?" I asked stupidly.
Wenn slapped my arm, hard.
"To the party dumb ass. It's on Friday"
"I'm not a party person." I say unenthusiastically.
"Who's not a party person?" Wenn replies aghast.
He grabs my cell phone and starts poking around.
"I.E Me." I say grabbing for my phone and miss.
"You're going." Wenn confirms.
"No I'm not." I deny.
"Yes you are and who is Fay?"
Hearing her name come out from Wenn's mouth caused me to swerve the car a little. I sneak a look at Wenn who was now scrolling down my contact list.
"Fay, Fay, Fay, and Fay... man, you've called this chick like a hundred times."
"Give the phone I say sternly." Reaching my hand out blinded while still looking ahead of me at the road.
"No way man, I just started reading your messages."
"Give me the phone." I say loudly now as I frantically tried to pry his fingers away from my cell one handedly without really seeing.
"Man I'm your best friend, you can't hide stuff from me, especially when it involves a girl."
I'm barely paying attention to where I'm going as I look back and forth between the road and Wenn, trying fight him off.
We wrestle a great deal until finally we pull up into my drive through and I could focus on Wenn and getting back my phone.
"Damn it Wenn, let go!" I say tugging on his grasp.
"I... just... got... to the... good... part-
He said seething as he struggled to read the phone screen.
"I don't care!" I yelled back.
Unfortunately, Wenn unexpectedly bent my hand back and I was forced to let go. He then dashed out of the car and ran around back.
I followed him foaming at the mouth. As I started to catch up with him, I could hear his comments such as,
"This chick's sounds hot." Or "Damn, she got a lot of problems." Also, "You ask her on what she's wearing but you don't ask her what bra size she owns? Dude!" Wenn looks back at me. "What's wrong with you?"
I dive right then for the kill but then the sound of my ringtone caused me to stop.
"Dude," Wenn says turning to face me. "It's her."
"Give me the phone, I tell him propelling forward to grab it, but before I could reach it, Wenn had already answered for himself.
"Sup cutie," he said into the phone nonchalantly.
I close my eyes giving up on reaching for the phone, but then suddenly Wenn was shoving the phone into my hands.
"Dude." Wenn said. "That's not a chick."
I cautiously put the phone up to my ear, and in that second, a booming voice sprung into my ear.
"You the guy harassing my wife?"
Greg.
"You had me arrested." I told him bluntly.
Wenn looked at me in shock.
"Damn right I did, and I'll do it again if I see you, or hear you talk my girl again, you got that?"
"Not really." I told him calmly. "Can I talk to Fay?"
I knew what I was doing was risky and pretty ballsy of me but this guy's arrogance makes me feel like he's just a tease.
"What the hell is wrong with you, didn't you just fuckin hear me not to get near her?!!
"I'm not near her."
Through the line, a string of cuss words came shooting at me and I had to move my ear away from the speaker.
"Put it on speaker." Wenn mouthed.
In that moment, Wenn had ripped the phone away from me, once again and turned it on speaker himself.
"You bastard, you listen here." Greg injected with a merciless tone. "You've been warned. If see you talking to Fay, I swear I'll have you arrested for rape!"
I blinked.
"And if that happens, I'll see to it that you'd never make it out again!"
"Don't you think you're being a little to melodramatic buddy?" Wenn asks with a smirk on his face. "Man, threatening Dom like this is like pretty much asking for him to do the exact opposite. Don't stress yourself too much okay dude? Chow."
Wenn hung up.
"Well said." I say.
"Yeah well, I figured it was the least I could do since now you now owe me an explanation."
"I don't owe you shit." I say snatching my phone back and shoving it into my back pocket. I rounded the house to the front door.
"Yeah, you do." Wenn persisted as he followed at my heels. "And you're also going to that party."
I unlocked my door and walked into house.
"Yeah, like hell I will."
With that said, I merrily gave Wenn a push and closed the door on face.
"I've got you're phone!" his muffled voice called through the wooden door arrogantly.
I sighed realizing it was gone.
"Damn mosquito!"
