Jason cursed under his breath as he lifted Lily from the ground, sirens wailing from a distance.
Either someone called the police, or some officers heard the gun shots.
He could feel Lily gasp for air, chest rising and falling faster than he could handle.
Fire rose in his veins, and he could slowly feel his rage take over.
There was no doubt who shot her.
No doubt at all.
When gazed where the shots came from, no one was there.
That’s when he knew that Damian was trying to weaken Lily.
He planned the whole thing...
And he was planning something else.
Something big.
“I swear, Damian,” Jason growled. “You’re dead meat. I’ll torture you until you’ll beg for forgiveness, and then I’ll kill you. Death is too tame for someone like you.”
He gazed down at Lily, who’s eyes were wide open, her lips starting to turn a pale white as her body shook like a live wire.
“You need to get her to a hospital!” a pedestrian yelled.
“I called the police! They’ll be here any minute!” another one shouted.
Jason pushed his rage down even though it was boiling inside him.
He had to remind himself that the people were just trying to help.
They didn’t know what was happening. They depended on the police.
Not themselves.
He knew that Lily should go to a hospital.
But she wasn’t safe anymore. He couldn’t leave her in someone else’s care.
But finally, he made a decision.
“It’s okay,” he told the crowd. “I can take care of her from here.”
“She needs medical help!” someone yelled.
“Jason…” Lily’s voice came out strained, “I can’t breathe… It hurts too much….”
He gazed down at her, watching her eyes glaze over with pain. “Don’t talk. It’s okay. We’ll take care of you.”
We?
“Let’s get back to the hotel. You’re going to be okay, I promise.”
He then he walked into the crowd, pushing everyone away with his broad shoulders and to his surprise, no one followed him, but then Jason turned a corner and a girl started walking toward them.
She had long sandy blonde hair that fell down to her waist. She stopped in front of Jason, gazing up at him with her hardened golden eyes.
Who is that girl? Lily thought. She looks familiar.
“What happened?” the girl said angrily.
Jason knew she wasn’t angry at him. She was pissed at the situation.
Just like him.
“Damian shot her with a pistol,” Jason responded, voice filled with boiling rage.
“Are you serious?” the girl questioned. “He’s gotten that desperate?”
“I don’t think he was trying to kill her.” Jason’s eyes darkened. “I think he’s trying to weaken her.” But he took a deep breath, attempting to calm his anger. “We have to get back to the hotel. I need to heal her. Let’s keep him one step behind us.”
“Where’s your car?” she asked.
“We walked, Celeste.”
Celeste? Lily thought. Why does that name sound so familiar?
“Then you were planning on walking back? Do you know how dangerous that is?”
“Then what the hell do you suggest?” he asked a little harshly.
“You know what I’m suggesting, Jason.” Her yellow eyes narrowed.
Yellow eyes…
Lily’s breath caught. The girl from my dream… The one that always saved me from the werewolf… The one that killed Jason…
“She doesn’t know about that yet,” Jason argued. “She’ll be scared.”
“Know about what…?” Lily whispered in fear.
Not one of them glanced down at her despite her cracked voice. It was like she was a ghost to them.
“Better scared than dead,” Celeste snapped.
Jason looked down at Lily then. “Are you afraid of heights?”
“No….”
Why would he ask that? Was he going to throw her in the air?
Also... why would he care?
He looked the type that enjoyed scaring people.
He glanced back up to Celeste then, as if he didn’t hear Lily’s thoughts. “Fine, I’ll do it. But first, you have to go grab her book. If someone stole it. Go take it back.”
“Fine.” Celeste walked past Jason and turned the corner, disappearing into the night.
“Hold on to me,” Jason said to Lily. “Whatever you do. Don’t let go.”
Before she could ask him what he was doing, wings with dark black feathers sprouted from his back.
Her eyes widened as they shone white in the lighting of the stores.
What the…?
But they were beautiful...
Lily never saw anything like that before.
She knew that Angels had wings, but Jason wasn’t an Angel...
He was Fallen. A demon...
His wings beat against the cold night air like a gorgeous black raven, and they launched into the sky.
