I hummed a soft tune as I flipped the bacon in the pan, hearing its satisfying sizzle as the small puffs of smoke came from the boiling oil.
After finishing with the bacon, I placed them on a plate with a bundle of eggs seated on the side.
I then stepped over to the living room.
Luca was still asleep on the couch, his breaths soft and gentle as he dreamed peacefully.
I set the plate down on the coffee table and knelt down, gently brushing his hair away from his face. “Luuuuca.”
He moaned in annoyance, eyes squeezing shut tighter as he pushed his face into the pillow.
“Come on,” I said, tucking some of his hair behind his ear, “it’s time to get up now.”
He parted his lashes then, his eyes so soft and lazy, and he gazed up at me, blinking hazily.
I stood then walking over to the plate of food.
He sat up then and exhaled a long yawn, rubbing his sleepy eyes as he pulled the blanket off himself.
I stepped over to him and set the food on his lap.
He picked up the silverware and pressed it into the eggs, taking a bite and chewing slowly.
My lashes lowered.
Still numb, huh?
We remained silent the whole time, and I sat beside him, watching his stance carefully. “How are you feeling?”
He pressed his fork into his food. “My sister just died, and I ran ten miles from her murderer. What do you think?”
I smiled slightly.
Ah, the sarcasm.
There’s my Luca.
He continued eating his food quietly before he finished, and I gently took the plate from him, stepping over to the kitchen and placing them in the sink.
When I stepped back over to him, he was still seated on the couch, staring off into space as if he were on another plane of existence.
I sat beside him, watching him curiously when he snapped out of it and glanced at me.
“Do you want to talk about it?” I asked him.
He stared at me for a moment, as if wondering if I was serious.
He then stood and walked off, making my lips part. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
I looked after him, lashes lowering. “Are you in denial?”
“Shut up,” he said then, walking over to the door as he pulled on his shoes.
“Where are you going?” I asked him.
“Away from you.”
I immediately appeared in front of the door, and he shot his head up at the action.
“I do apologize,” I said then, lashes lowering, “but I cannot allow you to leave.”
His breaths shortened, and he glared at me. “Why?”
“Because you’re in danger,” I stated.
“You killed him,” he reminded me.
I just remained in place, leaning against the door. “There are more after you.”
“How do you know?” he demanded.
I just smiled. “I’m a demon. I know everything.”
He just tapped his shoe impatiently. “Move.”
“No.”
“Move.”
“No.”
He just sighed. “Please?”
I smiled. “I appreciate the politeness, but no.”
He just glared up at me. “Dante, what the hell do you want?”
“I already explained this,” I answered, “you.”
“Why would you want me?” he demanded.
“I also stated that that was a secret.”
His eyes blazed in anger then. “Move.”
“No,” I said again.
“I will call the police,” he snapped.
“Try it,” I stated then, smirking, “I dare you.”
He just scoffed and spun around, marching over to the couch and settling down.
“Gave up already?” I said then. “Pity. I was hoping you’d put up a fight.”
He just grabbed a pillow and hauled it at me.
I caught it instantly, lowering under my arm as I stepped back over to him.
I set the pillow on the couch then, gazing down at him. “Are you done?”
“I hate you.”
“No, you don’t.”
“I want you to die.”
“You’re a bad liar,” I stated then, smirking.
He just scoffed and covered himself in the blanket, lying down and facing away from me.
I watched him in amusement.
