Okay I just felt like writing down what works for me while I'm creating characters. I have 3 basic methods for this story:
1. Selena and Lead (lol what an odd pair) follow my 'Reality Distortion' method. Allow me to explain, with the help of Gacha Life 2.
So step 1: I have a real person in mind. It doesn't matter whether you know them that well or not, because well, they serve as a base for your fictional character. Soo, in the image you'll see that I have a person in mind. Let's call her Amy. Not her real name but still... she, one of the founding members of my weird fan base (like fr who would read this nonsense) served as the base for Selena. (See cover image)
Step 2: Elements: For Selena, I chose her elements out a bit earlier before choosing Amy as her base.
Step 3: Modify! Amy has short dark brown / nearly black hair, and Selena's is a bit more on the brown side, and longer. Selena is older than Amy by 3-4 years or so, so she needs to look a bit more mature. Amy wears glasses, Selena doesn't.
Step 4: More characteristics. Amy and Selena both are quite pretty, with guys chasing them. So they share that one. They both share a tendency for crushing on fairly introverted clueless guys. But the elements I would imagine for the IRL Amy are actually totally different from Selena's. And even Amy isn't as outgoing with friends as Selena is.

Part 2:
Lead Carbon, on the other end of the spectrum, was created in a similar yet different way. His base, let's call him Jay, is an annoying classmate. (Again, see image)
He honestly looks more like Nick, but Nick is nothing like Jay except appearance.
So anyway, I introduced Lead as a mysterious figure in chapter 19 or something and was originally planning to have him be a villain. That ship did not sail. Why?
Because I have better standards for villain characters than modeling them off idiotic classmates. Even if this one does get decent grades.
Lead Carbon was created on a day when I was particularly ticked off by something stupid related to Jay. I used the element lead bc it's toxic, like how my mood was at the time. Carbon because Jay seemed to be everywhere at once. And I only created a third element - oxygen for him after he turned good.
Plus another thing. Something came over me in the initial planning stages that I should ask Jay for ideas on powers, and he had a ton of them for carbon, so... huh... that helped, i guess.
I later tweaked Jay's appearance to be completely different. Better hair, different skin tone, gray eyes, and generally much better overall.
Even personality got altered a lot! Lead Carbon is 20 times more fun. But one element I retained was a good reputation with teachers and such, a direct result from having a sister who studied at EU as well. And a mild depression I always think Jay has because of the expectations to live up to.

Anyway that's about it, I'm done ranting. Hope it may help in ur own characters, bye!
