Chapter One
I remember the first time I had the dream. It was mid-October, and the weather had been unusually warm that year. I had tossed and turned until I finally fell asleep, and I remember standing at the top of Claggart Falls; balancing on a small boulder. As the rushing of the water filled my ears, adrenaline coursed through my veins.514Please respect copyright.PENANAtpzS8PS2fU
The urge to jump was so powerful, I felt as though I couldn’t control my actions. My head was screaming at my feet to stop as they stepped forward, launching my body into the air.
As I fell through the air, the skin on my back felt itchy and pain pulsed through my spine. Before I hit the bottom, I would wake every time. Until last night.
I poked at my waffles, my mind still wandering. I wanted to find out what my dream meant. My family said that I was eccentric, and heck maybe they were right. They didn’t understand the way I thought. My little sister, Marlie, was embarrassed by me most days. I never was the popular kid at school, and would rather compete in theater auditions than sports.
“Zenny’s thinking about his stories again.” Marlie announced this loudly, giving me a funny look.
“MarlieAnn, no shouting, please.” My dad drawled from behind his paper.”
“You’re going to miss the bus if you don’t hurry up you two. . . Zenarin, stop playing with your food. You really need to eat in the mornings!” My mom was a hardworking woman, and she looked tired this morning. Her eyes shone with concern, and I knew she was always worrying about me.
I shrug, “I’m just not very hungry . . . I’ll eat lunch, I promise.” I grab my bag from its place at the foot of my chair and hug her on the way out. She sighs, shaking her head, and shoos us out the door.
