When nightmarish, murderous creatures materialize at the source of cast magic, a magic-dependant world is plunged into chaos. Under the rule of the Eyyliks, a race of humanoid warriors who can see the magic potential in people, those found to have magic are killed on sight for fear of these creatures appearing.

Having fled society after she awakened, a young sorceress with healing gifts meets an amputee who believes he holds the key to ending the dangers of spellcasting. The two of them travel to the Citadel, the fortressed home of the Eyylik, in an attempt to make magic accepted in the world and prevent the Shades from appearing.
