For the past 20 years, Beatrix Sendak has placed herself at the intersection where raw vulnerabilities of parents, children and child care staff meet. She observes and supports children, families and teachers with sensitivity, compassion and humor. All of her stories are based in real-life experiences but are fictionalized to maintain confidentiality and fill in the memory gaps.
When I was a young preschool teacher, I innocently started a conversation with my director about a seemingly innocuous topic. Her response was to release anger and/or resentment in my direction. I immediately reverted back to a scared, little girl who was afraid of the adults in her life. This story helped me make sense of that encounter while exploring the desire to flee my profession and the struggle to persevere.
