Casey unfolded a fresh new outfit and quickly got dressed. She had combed her hair four times by now, but she did so one more time. She wanted to look presentable for her first day at work. Making a bad first impression could mean her job and Casey knew she couldn't let that happen.317Please respect copyright.PENANAPVD4Basi8W
Yesterday she had glanced at the packet Reece had given her the other day, and she was left completely speechless. Her pay was twenty nine dollars an hour and she'd be working for six hours a day. She never expected to be making this much money, and she certainly didn't expect to be making it at a fast food restaurant.317Please respect copyright.PENANAW3RqNaMGZi
She made sure to lock her door tightly as she began her stroll down the street. When the orange building finally came into her view she jogged over to it. She was heading for the front door when she pulled away from it. She quietly scolded herself for almost making the same mistake twice. She remembered that awkward situation she got into at Lovin's Diner. She had to find the back door.317Please respect copyright.PENANANPjUyzT379
She walked around the restaurant, along a thin gravelly path. She could barely see the path under all the thick bushes, but she could tell it was there. Finally, she climbed out onto the cement pavement right outside the back of the building. There she saw a dirty, yellow door. A few feet in front of the door was a dark green dumpster. She walked up to the door. It's yellow paint was chipping off and the metal handle was rusting. She pulled the door open and entered.317Please respect copyright.PENANAZUIppyFwXa
At first, she didn't see anyone around, but then she noticed two people talking indistinctly at the front of the store. She could tell one of them was Reece. She walked up through the kitchen and through the doors. Reece and another girl dressed in a yellow and orange apron uniform were standing in front of the counter.317Please respect copyright.PENANA257LLBS2Jd
"There you are!" Reece said, looking at Casey. 317Please respect copyright.PENANAypCnUHYChy
"Carly, this is the girl you saw the other day," Reece explained to the girl who was with her. 317Please respect copyright.PENANAtcSaKyvnMJ
"Nice to meet you," Casey greeted.317Please respect copyright.PENANASLzzUIoeJi
"You too," Carly said with a friendly smile.317Please respect copyright.PENANAEGets0F9ob
"Oh, Casey," Reece started, "you didn't come in through the back door, did you?" Reece asked.317Please respect copyright.PENANAHBInUZ3Bzd
"Um, I did," Casey responded.317Please respect copyright.PENANAItISPgXibr
Reece sighed, "Well, you are new here so I shouldn't be surprised. Next time, you can just come in through the front door. That back area is not very well kept." 317Please respect copyright.PENANAG1aM15yTGS
"Oh, sorry about that." Casey silently scolded herself yet again. She swore, she couldn't do anything right. 317Please respect copyright.PENANA255GJH2KFV
"It's alright. Now, let me give you a quick tour of the restaurant." Reece opened the counter door and Casey followed. 317Please respect copyright.PENANAz00Ca6fLjl
"This is the dining area. There are a few arcade machines here, and in the back are the restrooms. Unfortunately these are the only toilets in the restaurant so if you ever need to go you'll have to use these." Casey nodded. She wondered why the restaurant was so tiny if the restaurant chain clearly had money to improve the building. 317Please respect copyright.PENANAAGx6NzCAlv
"You won't need to go into the back of the restaurant very often, but there's no harm in showing you around there." Reece and Casey made their way over to the kitchen doors and into the back of the restaurant. 317Please respect copyright.PENANA2SeJVAaE0e
"This is the kitchen, which I'm sure you've already seen, and back here…" Reece walked further into a small area with three doors.317Please respect copyright.PENANA6dZctdsp25
"Here is my office, the back door, and the security office. You've already seen my office and the back area, so I'll show you the security office." Reece opened the black door to her left. The room was completely dark gray. The little amount of light in the room came from some dim security monitors. It was quiet except for a faint buzzing noise caused by all the electronics. 317Please respect copyright.PENANA8f1FkX9DMO
"Joe," Reece said peeking into the dark room. There was a man sitting at the desk watching the monitors. He sighed and turned to Reece and Casey. 317Please respect copyright.PENANAAzi5Yl3nfI
"What?" He asked in a unenthusiastic tone. 317Please respect copyright.PENANAY1uXlR1WwD
"I just wanted to introduce you and Casey. She's the new cashier." Reece looked at Casey. 317Please respect copyright.PENANACDwxayJ6yq
"Casey, this is Joe, our security guard." 317Please respect copyright.PENANAv41ODFHRh2
"It's nice to meet you." Casey waved to him briefly. He stared back at her not replying or returning the gesture. His look was one of complete uninterested. 317Please respect copyright.PENANAR8mE2HKO7K
"Uh, Casey," Reece said, trying to break the awkward silence, "You should get to the front of the restaurant. Your shift is about to start. I'm sure the rest of your coworkers will introduce themselves when they're ready." Casey nodded, not wanting to stand in that doorway any longer. She headed towards the dining area. She pushed through the kitchen doors and was again met by Carly. 317Please respect copyright.PENANA5TTeVwoRve
"Casey," Carly greeted as soon as she noticed her, "you're probably ready to get to work, right? I'll get out of your way, but if you need help with anything just let me know." Carly was turning to go into the kitchen, but she suddenly stopped. She quickly looked back at Casey. 317Please respect copyright.PENANAyf0GrHPbdf
"Oh, you're not wearing a uniform," She noted. Casey looked down at herself. 317Please respect copyright.PENANAxxEN6wBvjo
"I didn't know I needed to," Casey stuttered. 317Please respect copyright.PENANADUiPPn0c6x
"Don't even worry about it. I'll be right back. I'm sure Reece has a spare uniform that you can use." Carly hurried into the back of the restaurant, leaving Casey alone at the counter. She didn't take too long, however, to return with an orange and yellow uniform. It was just a short sleeved shirt with a vest sewn into it, unlike Carly's uniform, which was a shirt and apron. Casey just assumed that only employees who worked in the kitchen wore aprons. 317Please respect copyright.PENANAQg0RQox7qD
"You can just throw it on over your clothes. It's pretty lightweight," Carly said handing the folded shirt to Casey. Casey quickly put the shirt on and adjusted it. 317Please respect copyright.PENANAiy4BWvDe22
"There you go. It looks nice. It really matches your hair." 317Please respect copyright.PENANAKj51x9HBBP
Casey smiled, "Thank you."317Please respect copyright.PENANAkw7N1j22Qo
"Anyways, you better get to work. Sorry for keeping you so long. I'll just be in the kitchen if you need anything." Carly retired to the kitchen, after telling her this.317Please respect copyright.PENANAGu3DjCRSvS
Casey wasn't as nervous as she thought she'd be. She was used to taking orders and operating a cash register, so she knew she'd have nothing to worry about. It wasn't long before the restaurant started filling up with customers, and Casey had begun taking orders. She was working as efficiently as she could.317Please respect copyright.PENANApBrhkv6nRH
All she had to do was take the customers' order, take their name, record it on the register, and then wait for the information to go to a thin screen in the kitchen and the cook would prepare the food. She already knew about all the procedures in the restaurant from the packet Reece had given her the other day. The job was a lot easier than the previous ones she had. About the only thing slightly inconvenient was being the only cashier in the whole restaurant. In other words, she had to deal with all of the customers herself. Sometimes Carly would help out in the dining area, but she was constantly doing something and was usually too busy to deal with customers, other than delivering them their meals. Other than that, the job was like a dream come true. It was easy, and the pay was more than she had ever earned anywhere else.317Please respect copyright.PENANAtfKNy2dCTS
After a good couple of hours, Casey noticed there weren't any customers in the restaurant. It had been at least twenty minutes since she took anyone's order. The sky was beginning to turn orange as the sun began setting. Casey's eyes kept closing as she rested her elbows on the counter. She quickly sprung up however, as she heard the kitchen doors opening. She turned around and saw Reece.317Please respect copyright.PENANADa6z6jqqrp
"Hey Casey. You're getting tired, huh?" 317Please respect copyright.PENANAHwk7ykBQaA
"Oh, maybe a little bit," Casey muttered, "I didn't sleep that well last night." 317Please respect copyright.PENANAVExctqOcU5
"Oh, it's fine. I'm pretty tired, too. I just needed to let you know that me and the team are going to be leaving the restaurant for the night." Once she finished talking, the kitchen doors opened again. She quickly stepped aside and let Carly and two other people pass in front of her. 317Please respect copyright.PENANAhXYKudl1Q5
"Oh," Casey was immediately very nervous to hear that. "Does that mean I'm going to be here alone?"317Please respect copyright.PENANAOV1K1sUV7f
"No, no. Joe is staying too. You probably won't have to do much anyways, though. The restaurant is pretty quiet at night." Casey wasn't too happy to hear that Joe was staying, but she was glad to hear that she probably wouldn't have to make customers' orders from scratch. 317Please respect copyright.PENANAglc3l5d2KM
Reece stepped out from behind the counter and said, "Well, since practically everyone is here I guess I'll go ahead and introduce you to everyone. You and Carly already met, so that only leaves Stanley, our cook, and Otis, the janitor." Casey looked over at her coworkers. Along with Carly there were two other men standing in front of the exit. One of the men had a name tag that read "Stanley". He was about a foot taller than Casey and looked very well built. He had sand colored hair that was slicked upwards and he wore a yellow and orange uniform similar to Carly's. 317Please respect copyright.PENANAcnmA9oExMh
"It's great to meet you, Casey," he said, smiling in a very friendly way. 317Please respect copyright.PENANAKZnliW5cYP
"Thanks, it's nice to meet you too," Casey replied. The other person standing beside Stanley didn't say anything yet. He was a young man, with wavy hair and a thin stature. He wore an orange jumpsuit. Casey assumed he was Otis. He seemed to be lost in thought until he finally noticed everyone looking at him. 317Please respect copyright.PENANAYXj16k0A6J
"Oh, hey," he greeted casually, lifting his hand slightly and waving. Casey waved back.317Please respect copyright.PENANAgweiKIHRFk
"Alright, we better get going now. Joe's still back in the security office if you need anything, and Otis and Stanley will be coming back in about an hour to lock up the restaurant. Do you think you'll be alright, Casey?" 317Please respect copyright.PENANAvdZNvnrFMW
Casey stuttered for a second, "Uh, yeah. Yeah, I'll be fine." She realized she probably didn't sound like she thought she would be fine, but there wasn't anything she could do about that. 317Please respect copyright.PENANAU3VuajtgrI
"Alright," Reece nodded, "we'll be going, then. Take care of the place." Reece motioned for everyone to follow her as she went out through the front doors. Stanley and Otis followed her out the entrance. 317Please respect copyright.PENANAlZo6I0DTNz
"You'll do alright, Casey," Carly said, giving Casey a thumbs up before following everyone else out the doors. Casey watched the group leave. She stared through the glass, until she couldn't see any of her coworkers. Once they were gone, Casey began to feel a little anxious. This was her first day working here and she was already alone in the restaurant. She had a nagging feeling that something was going to go horribly wrong. Something would go awry and she would be fired. The moment that word entered her mind she shook her head. She didn't want to think about losing her job.317Please respect copyright.PENANAYCNQBG1K67
She rested her arms on the counter and tried to relax. She peeked at the windows every now and again to check if any customers were coming. At some point she was sure she heard footsteps approaching the doors. Nobody was there when she looked, but she could still hear the sound. The sound of footsteps, or knocking maybe. She wasn't quite sure what is was, but it was still going, even though she could see there was nobody at the doors.317Please respect copyright.PENANAxPkZQpL5wY
Casey turned her head to look around the room, and she could hear the sound clearer. She backed up from the counter and again, the sound became clearer. She fully turned around and faced the kitchen doors. It had to be coming from there. Slowly she pushed the doors open and peeked inside. She didn't see anything, but the sound was louder and Casey recognized it. It was the same sound she heard yesterday when she came out of Reece's office.317Please respect copyright.PENANA15z4bqrUnP
She walked up to the yellow door all the way at the back. It was definitely coming from behind that door. What Casey wasn't sure of was whether she should open it. The only other person in the restaurant was Joe, and Casey really didn't want to talk to him. She thought for a moment that it might be best to leave whatever was making the sound alone. She didn't want to get scratched or bitten by some animal. Then again she didn't want to be held responsible if something happened. Of course, the moment that thought came into her mind she couldn't forget about it. She had do something.317Please respect copyright.PENANARdfBa9RX7f
She reluctantly knocked on the black security door. Joe didn't say anything and the door didn't open. With a sigh Casey decided to open it. She turned the handle and it opened to a small, gray room. Joe was still sitting in his seat, not acknowledging her.317Please respect copyright.PENANAQrssjvnyEF
She was wondering if she should shut the door and pretend that she came into the wrong room, but that would be awkward. She decided to just say what she needed to say. 317Please respect copyright.PENANAbx4PK9f8nO
"Hey," Casey said quietly. For a moment there was silence, then Joe sighed. 317Please respect copyright.PENANAbQcO2m3lEQ
"What?" 317Please respect copyright.PENANAFNxQcom5Rw
"Uh, sorry to bother you. There's a sound coming from the back door..." Joe exhaled slowly as if just talking to her was taking so much of his energy.317Please respect copyright.PENANAtdwMneo8KK
"Oh, yeah?" He glanced at her.317Please respect copyright.PENANAQIkjizeEpD
"Yeah. Can you check the cameras to see what's out there?" 317Please respect copyright.PENANAB9z36OsYZt
"No," Joe said plainly, "the security camera out there broke a long time ago." Casey straightened herself out. 317Please respect copyright.PENANAlDJWSWKAiZ
"Well, then what are we supposed to do about it?" 317Please respect copyright.PENANApF42UPuuKd
Joe turned his chair to face her. "Ignore it. Those sounds are normal." Casey couldn't quite understand how these noises could be normal. They sounded so out of place. There definitely had to be a person or an animal in the back of the restaurant. 317Please respect copyright.PENANAKKjDFTS7tG
"What if something happens?" Casey asked with a firm tone. Joe rubbed his forehead, clearly agitated. 317Please respect copyright.PENANAyhlWiHdUrD
"Don't you have a job to be doing?" Joe pointed with his thumb, in the direction of the front counter. Casey realized she wasn't going to get help from him. 317Please respect copyright.PENANAGVuMSQyezE
"Uh, yeah. Sorry for bothering you." She let the door close lightly then walked over to the back exit. The sound definitely didn't sound normal to her. There were two choices she had, but it felt more like she only had one. She could ignore the sound and risk getting blamed for whatever might happen, or she could investigate it and risk getting attacked by an animal. Casey rubbed her forehead and sighed. She knew she had to take her chances with the animal.317Please respect copyright.PENANAsb1HiR0uXE
The yellow door creaked open and Casey walked out, closing the door behind her. In front of her was the large, green dumpster. It was shifting slightly. Casey realized it sounded scarily like there was a person inside. She stepped towards the dumpster. She briefly looked around for something she could use to open the dumpster lid with, instead of her hand. She didn't see anything around, though, so she began lifting the lid. She knew she was probably going to regret doing this.317Please respect copyright.PENANAznPLUHk7Xl
Upon opening the lid she looked in, but immediately backed up as she was hit with the horrible smell of garbage. She held her breath as she peered in again. She couldn't tell what she was looking at at first. There were garbage bags and bits of trash, but there was also something else. Something black in the middle of the dumpster. Casey's heart nearly shot out of her chest when the something that she was looking at, moved. She realized that the thing she was looking at had the vague silhouette of a person. Yet it had black fur covering it's entire body. The thing didn't look like an animal, but it didn't look like a person either. Just when she was telling herself that she was imagining all of this, the thing began to stand up.317Please respect copyright.PENANAEJwu5VhciZ
Casey jumped back in an instant and slammed her back against the yellow door. She frantically tried pushing on it and shoving it, but it didn't open. She completely forgot that it had to be pulled for it to open. She looked back at the dumpster. She was so panicked she didn't know what to do.317Please respect copyright.PENANAx5Et5IReZm
Then the dumpster lid opened a crack. Casey watched it carefully. The thing she saw lifted the lid up showing just it's head, which looked disturbingly human, and yet not human at all. 317Please respect copyright.PENANAcrqvJxZnTs
"I'm sorry... Ugh, this is weird..." The thing began talking, and Casey just stared, frozen with a disturbed expression. 317Please respect copyright.PENANABNxgyXYCQX
"I didn't mean to scare you," the thing said. There was a long silence. 317Please respect copyright.PENANASm02wgZKwG
"What are you doing in there?" Casey asked in an apprehensive tone. That was all she could think to say. The thing laughed a little.317Please respect copyright.PENANAdAb4oBo8hi
"Nothing," it replied. It paused for a second. 317Please respect copyright.PENANAhkLrrqBi3O
Then it asked, "Do you work here? Who are you?" 317Please respect copyright.PENANAhqt2cUrzHs
"Who am I? Who are you, and what are you doing in the dumpster?" Casey couldn't believe she was having a conversation with this... person? It had to be a person. It had to be a man in some kind of suit, that was the only way she could explain what she was seeing. 317Please respect copyright.PENANAXOlthU6zXT
"I'm Gray. I, uh, work here." 317Please respect copyright.PENANAeeeMXwZRZJ
"You work here?" Casey asked, knowing there was no way that was true. 317Please respect copyright.PENANAmB1t5X1gg7
"Yeah," he responded. The way he spoke like this was completely normal made Casey uncomfortable. 317Please respect copyright.PENANA8Q4w1E3VrD
"What are you wearing? Is that a costume or something?" It sounded so much like a person it had to just be a man in a costume. The guy looked down at himself.317Please respect copyright.PENANAR6iSfsJZqZ
"Oh, uh..." he laughed, "It's hard to explain. I'm-" Casey heard the back door suddenly swing open. She jumped and quickly spun around towards the door. The security guard stood in the doorway, clearly not happy. Without saying anything he grabbed the back of her shirt and shoved her inside the restaurant, while he stepped outside. Casey stumbled inside and when she looked back, the door had shut. She picked herself up from the ground and looked up at the door, very confused. What was that about? 317Please respect copyright.PENANAEM1hUOeqjW
She stepped towards the door, then thought she heard a voice. She put her head up against the door to hear what was going on. She heard Joe talking. To her surprise, it sounded like he was talking to the man in the dumpster. 317Please respect copyright.PENANAXx4ACNHdfM
"She's new here. You don't need to worry about her. I'll take care of it," she heard Joe say. 317Please respect copyright.PENANA8iWKnIfZpr
"Oh, It's alright. I don't mind having someone to talk to. It gets pretty boring out here." The man said, laughing quietly. Joe didn't reply to him. Casey lifted her head from the door when she heard Joe walking towards it. The door opened then shut. Joe now stood in the middle of the hall looking at Casey. He stared at her angrily before finally talking. 317Please respect copyright.PENANA1L52VOhPLv
"Didn't I tell you not to go back there?" Casey's voice cracked as she tried to respond. 317Please respect copyright.PENANAAwFFUtFTxM
"Who... Who was that guy?" Joe's cold expression faded slightly.317Please respect copyright.PENANAsAxzwNVMgD
"There wasn't anyone out there." Casey was taken aback by that statement. That wasn't true. She was just out there and knew that there was a man out there. Casey wasn't sure what to say now. He was obviously lying, but why?317Please respect copyright.PENANAeK3OmfQDYY
Before Casey could say anything, Joe said, "You better to get back to work. Just because your shift is almost over doesn't mean you get to slack off until you're finished for the day." With how uncomfortable the situation was getting, Casey didn't mind getting back to work now. 317Please respect copyright.PENANA17c9NfIX0G
"Uh, yeah. Yeah, I'm going." Casey backed up before turning and leaving the kitchen. She was glad to know that her shift was almost over. However, that whole situation she just experienced still bothered her. Casey decided that she needed to focus on her work. However, there still weren't any customers coming in. The restaurant was empty.317Please respect copyright.PENANAHrwrFqSG4G
That was until the front doors suddenly opened. Casey's head shot up to see who just walked in. To her relief it wasn't a customer, it was Stanley and Otis. 317Please respect copyright.PENANAwF63S4o7kw
"Hey," Stanley greeted Casey as he walked in, "how've you been holding up?" 317Please respect copyright.PENANAUK5z86YyEW
"I'm, uh, managing." Casey replied.317Please respect copyright.PENANAZ9AI7hgWzB
"I wish we didn't all have to leave on your first day on the job. We just had to take care of some things." Stanley explained. Casey nodded. 317Please respect copyright.PENANAADEgDWgt3P
"Well, your shift is almost over isn't it? You can go ahead and leave early, we'll lock up the restaurant." 317Please respect copyright.PENANADTyEA5pkfC
"Oh, thanks." Casey was surprised to hear him make that offer, but she was happy that he did. She stepped out from behind the counter. She was heading towards the door when she stopped just before she passed Stanley and Otis.317Please respect copyright.PENANA0NGknvU5ya
"Oh, wait," she said abruptly. Stanley and Otis looked at her waiting to hear what she had to say. "Can I ask you guys something?" 317Please respect copyright.PENANASt7lVEPcmV
"Sure," Stanley agreed. 317Please respect copyright.PENANAfPqZgKRs81
"I saw something... No, I saw a person in the dumpster outside. It was super weird. I don't know what he was doing. Has that ever happened before?" The men looked at each other briefly. 317Please respect copyright.PENANAWQuKPCHdO1
"I'm surprised you met him so soon," Otis said. Stanley gave him a look when he said that. 317Please respect copyright.PENANA5f2rVqoYQ8
He looked back at Casey and said, "Yeah, I'm surprised too. That's such a weird thing to see. What were you doing back there anyways?" 317Please respect copyright.PENANARs63SC0IqK
"I just thought I heard something, and I was afraid there might've been an animal in the back, so I went to look. Have you guys ever seen that before?" Both Otis and Stanley answered at the same time, but gave different answers.317Please respect copyright.PENANAlOedgPbFMy
"Uh, no, I can't say that I have," Stanley replied. 317Please respect copyright.PENANA5JvMJZN0Jb
However, Otis simply replied, "Yeah." Stanley looked at Otis and roughly elbowed him in the shoulder. He looked back at Casey.317Please respect copyright.PENANAdPyDT3Bcy9
"Are you sure you saw that? I've seen animals in the dumpster before. Are you sure it wasn't an animal?" Casey didn't answer Stanley right away. She looked at Otis. 317Please respect copyright.PENANAuNmWslSsm2
"Uh, well, I don't know. Maybe it could've been an animal." 317Please respect copyright.PENANAIIoej50sBi
"Well, I don't blame you for not knowing for sure. You've been working for hours on end and stress can make you see stuff." Casey didn't know if she believed that. 317Please respect copyright.PENANAXpU2pVx2kH
"I don't want to keep you here any longer, so go ahead and get yourself home. We'll see you tomorrow." 317Please respect copyright.PENANA66SZA6Q8zI
"Thanks," Casey said slowly, "I guess." She left the restaurant. 317Please respect copyright.PENANAJ8k78zk1Oh
She buried her hands into her pockets when she got outside. It was turning fall and the weather was chilly. Silently, she thought that something wasn't right about her new job. It was clear her coworkers weren't telling her something. She was hesitant to ask questions about what was going on. She had a feeling that she didn't really want to know. What she did know was that she didn't hallucinate that guy in the dumpster. However, she tried to tell herself there was a reasonable explanation for a guy being in the dumpster. She didn't succeed in convincing herself, though. A light, but chilly gust of wind hit Casey in the face, taking her out of thought for a moment. She exhaled, and could see her breath. She then remembered the reason she needed the job in the first place. She wasn't in a position to quit and go searching for another job, not while she had rent to pay. Biddle's Burgers will have to do, for now anyways.
