When Rowena and the Consul Valerius meet, he's unaware of her heredity and gives her a nasty scar. As punishment, Nadia makes Rowena move in with Valerius as a means to help them learn to communicate and get along.

soon, Valerius finds himself enjoying his time with her, showing Rowena the luxuries of the upper-class citizens with special privileges, and finds himself getting attached to her as she shows him all the bonds of the lower-class and middle-class citizens, and the wonderful things that money can't buy.

Their bond is threatened, however when Rowena's mother and father come to town with a stranger following at their heels, a stranger they've arranged to marry Rowena.

Will Valerius get the courage to admit his feelings to Rowena, or will she already be out of his grasp by the time he realizes his growing affection for her?
