Mars paced in front of his s/o’s room, currently covered by curtains with those squiggly patterns.

He had requested a break from his current job. Of course, his boss let him due to how worried Mars had seemed. He was grateful, but at the time, Xepher’s disease hadn’t seemed that bad. Just a few coughs, some shoulder pain, and a tiny bit of swelling around the eyes.

A nurse walked out calmly, seemingly unaffected by the situation that was in front of them.
“Can I see them?” Mars asked, peeking through the little bit of open curtain in the hospital. The nurse just nodded, moving aside more curtains to let him inside. He ran in for a moment, before stopping at the agonizing sight. Laying in a hospital bed, Xepher looked to be in excruciating pain. His eyes had swelled up far more, looking like red puffy clouds. His skin was a sickening shade of white, almost as pale as fresh snow in winter. Even through the oxygen mask, he kept making a whine of sorts. He had red splotches all over his face and neck, some splotches larger than others. There were visible tear tracks on his face.

“X… Xepher?” Mars said meekly, his eyes starting to fill with tears. He hated the sight. All the little tubes, the heart machine beeping slowly, the oxygen mask, everything that laid before his eyes. Except Xepher. Mars rushed over to him, tears starting to pour down his cheeks. “Xepher.. Please, Xepher,” Mars gently crawled onto the hospital bed, wary of the tubes and wires. “Baby, look at me please.” He felt more tears stream down. Xepher was still in a forward laying position for a few minutes, before slowly flopping to his side.

“Mars…?” Xepher had questioned weakly. Mars hummed in response, his hand slowly making its way to Xepher’s hair. “Heh, it’s nice to-” Xeph coughed into his oxygen mask, before continuing. “To hear you again.” He smiled slightly, before taking an arm and wrapping it around Mars’ waist.

“It is, bub.” Mars responded, starting to choke on his tears. “Hey, I have an idea.. Why don’t we sing something real quick? I probably have to leave the room soon.” His hand started playing with Xepher’s hair, gently flopping curls up and down.

“Sounds fun.” Xepher smiled more, coughing again not long after.

The heart monitor had flatlined. Mars stopped singing, tears now starting to stream harder than before. “Xepher…?” He asked quietly, hoping he’d get some sort of response. Seconds went by.. Then minutes. ‘No. No no no no.. He’s not dead, right?’ Mars was hardly able to think that, choking on his own tears at this point.

“Xepher! Xepher please!” Mars wailed, before two nurses dragged him out. “Hey- Hey! Let me see him! Please let me see him! Please.. Please let me see him one last time.” The nurses shook their heads, walking back behind the curtains one final time.

“Ple- please don’t… don’t take my-y sunshine.. Away..” Mars finished, choking on his sobs. ‘You’re still here, Xeph. Still in my heart, forever and more.’
