The hospital was quiet at midnight. The steady beeping of the machines and the lingering scent of bleach hanging in the air. Dull pain from the stitches over his liver was impossible to ignore. The door creaked open.
“Mr. Smith, I’m here to give you your pain medication,” the night nurse said in a honey smooth voice.
“I take it Yolanda had the night off,” the old man spit back, unable to contain the shaking pain from his voice.
“Yes Mr. Smith, I’m covering for Yolanda,” she hands the old man a cup of water and a small plastic cup containing 2 small white pills.
“Doctor Alvarez says the surgery went great and that you’re looking at being released tomorrow. Congratulations Mr. Smith, you’ll be with your family in no time.”
The pills tasted like chalk going down. Sleep came like a wave, closing his eyes and carrying him off till morning.

“Do you have all your things Mr. Smith,” the nurse asked the old man.
“Yes I’m ready,” she escorted him out the door and down to the main lobby.
The large glass main entrance was bursting with light, his wife and kids were standing outside waving at him.
“Right this way Mr. Smith, it was a pleasure,” the nurse said as she walked with him towards the door. 142Please respect copyright.PENANAPTLWehxPRQ

“GET AWAY FROM THERE!” Screamed Yolanda.
The old man was standing on the threshold of his window, awakened from his delusion. The cold sharp wind running across his skin.
“My family is waiting for me. Goodbye Yolanda,” he jumped from his window; the once cruel wind, embracing him on the way down. There was no echo when his body hit the ground. Just a pool of blood leaking out of him and onto the cement.142Please respect copyright.PENANAJWy2yEPaUs
