I felt a tap on my arm which brought me back to present time. I glanced over at Bryant who was just looking at me. I leaned my head back sideways and looked back at the road, but kept glancing at him from the corner of my eye.
“Uhhhhh Bry? You good there, man?” I asked cautiously.
“Can I turn the radio on since you’re over there in your own little world?” I started laughing.
“Yes, Bryant, you may turn on the radio.” As soon as I said that, I quickly regrated my decision. Soon “Big Empty” by Stone Temple Pilot was blaring through my speakers and both Josh and Bryant were singing at the top of their lungs. I rolled my eyes at the boys, but secretly smiled at the craziness. Soon we pulled into Carmen’s driveway and I got out of the car. I had barely gotten both feet out when a small figure slammed into me with the biggest hug, almost nocking me over.
“Carmen!!!” I exclaimed as I tried to steady myself. She looked up at me and her bright eyes just glistened in the light. I sighed.
“There’s no way I could ever stay mad at you.” I squeezed her back and we started walking up to her house.
“Hey Bryant, hey Josh!” she said to the boys as they followed behind us. Soon all of us were sitting on the back porch soaking in the bright sunshine.
“When is Mia going to get here?” Carmen whispered. I shrugged my shoulders.
“They’re going to come whenever they want to.”
“Was David taking it hard?” I nodded my head slightly. Carmen reached over and held my hand.
“You hurt when he does don’t you?” I nodded my head again.
“I understand that too…” She replied softly, glancing over at Josh. I smirked at her and she quickly shoved me and I started laughing.
“What just happened!?” Josh exclaimed looking over at us two girls laughing.
“NOTHINGGGG!” we both cried as we were trying to catch our breath. The boys rolled their eyes at us acting like little girls. Bryant pulled out his phone and motioned for us to quiet down.
“Hey, David. You’re on speaker. The whole gang is here. What’s up?” he asked as we quickly scrambled over to the phone.
“Hey. So we were about to leave over here but dad got the call. It was the Barrett family. They didn’t live here in White Bridge, but were visiting some family in Blue Field. And this wasn’t an ordinary family. Dad did some research on the name and just found out that Mr. Barret was a major lawyer over in England. And it looks like he came over here to not only visit family but also get some evidence in a case.”
“How are you finding all this out?” Bryant asked.
“Dad said Mr. Barret has tons of newspaper articles and media about him.” Mia replied,
“He’s no stranger over in London. Seems as if he has put away some pretty violent men and made a lot of enemies.”
“But what does that have to do with the crash?” Carmen pipped in.
“Well…you know how dad said engine failure?” David said. All of us held our breath. The way he said that, we knew that wasn’t true; rather something worse. He continued on.
“The remains of the plane cooled off enough to rummage through. Come to find out it wasn’t the engine. It looked like someone had messed with the wires and it caused a glitch in the system, making the plane lose its bearings and do a nose dive.”
“Wait, wait, wait!” I exclaimed.
“Are you meaning to say that this wasn’t an accident!?! Rather…” my voice trailed off. Everyone stared at me with eyes wide open.
“You’re right, G. This wasn’t a freak accident; but murder.”
