As I stared at the wreckage, I realized it was a small prop plane. It was completely demolished as if had done a nose dive. As I looked around, this small stretch of road was swarming with firefighters, police, and medics. I soon saw a familiar face amongst the officers.
“MR. LENN!!” I called out as Mia called out “dad” at the same time. We sprinted over to him and met up with the boys who were already by his side. All of us just blankly looked at Mr. Lenn, who had a solemn look across his face.
“It happened about an hour ago. We’re still investigating what happened. What we think is a malfunction in the engines.” I noticed David slowly walk over to the bright yellow tape and just stare at the smoldering mess of metal. David was a pilot himself and had been for the past year. It was crazy to know a boy my age was one of the best pilots in our region. I knew this was going to hit close to him.
“Do you know who was in it?” David called out, still looking at the scene.
“No. We’ve gotten as much DNA as we could….but sadly, there’s barely any remains left. It’ll take a while for the lab to analyze everything. But we’re trying to decipher the numbers on the side of the plane. That can tell us who owned it.”
“Do you know how many people?”
“We’re thinking four. And it honestly looks as if it was a small family.” All of us groaned hearing that news. David’s head dropped and just slowly shook it. Mia went over and laid her head on David’s shoulder to try to comfort him. As we stand in silence, my phone started ringing again.
“It’s Carmen.” I put the phone up to my ear and met with a loud screech and yelling.
“GRACEEEEEE. I JUST HEARD!!!! YOU WONNNNN!!!” I smiled at hearing the voice of my other best friend. Carmen, Mia, and I were so close we called each other “sister.” You rarely saw one of us without the other two.
“Yeah.” I said solemnly. Silence.
“Grace? What’s wrong?” I explained what had happened at the scene.
“Oh my goodness. I hadn’t heard…” her voice trailed off. After a few moments, her mood changed and quickly said,
“Hey, why don’t you come over to my house?”
“Gang, Carmen wants to know if we want to come over to her house?” Josh quickly replied.
“Well duh!?! What are we waiting for?” All of us died laughing. Josh was the type that could brighten anyone’s day. His spunk and dad jokes could make the saddest person roll on the ground laughing.
“Well I knew YOU would be up for it.” I said smirking at him. He rolled his eyes and started walking back to the car. I glanced over my shoulder and saw Mia and David still standing together. Bryant walked over and suggested an idea.
“What if Josh and I ride over to Carmen’s house with you, and we let Mia and David come on their own time?” I nodded my head in agreement. As we got into the car, I sighed. This was definitely not the way I had planned this day to go. I steered my truck around the wreckage and started the 15-minute drive to Carmen’s house. The ride was silent, which led my mind to wander back to when I first met this small group of friends.
