I don't know if it's a thing, maybe it already is an established thing, but something that keeps me writing on my projects is the fact that I gamify the entire process. I use the system of Dungeons & Dragons even though I modify everything to suit my own story.
For example: I use character sheets from D&D for all my main characters, even though I do not use the points necessarily, but more as a way to structure the character profiles.
I also solo play and base some of my writing on actual gameplay because most of my D&D campaigns take place in Avoranic (my fictional world) anyway! I make sure to adapt gameplay to the story of the book though.
This actually keeps me more motivated and it makes writing even more entertaining, especially to a nerd like me, lol. I rarely play D&D in groups, I always play solo because I prefer that and I want to maybe use it in my writing projects.
I will not say that I'm an expert or anything, in fact, I'm actually a beginner or intermediate D&D player. It doesn't really care though, because I always have fun with this. I think that's the point.
I also use dice to determine some actions sometimes if I have writer's block. Maps and figures are often used to make things more clear and visual to me as well.
Honestly, I can go on and on about how I use D&D for writing my projects. Gamified writing is something I'm very passionate about and I'm planning to use it in my participation in NaNoWriMo this year as well.
