The beginning of the school year, my friend who was with me for a long time followed me to this school, Jacksonville High School. Jamie Heartstone, she’s a year older at 16, but also in my grade. We knew each other since 2nd grade elementary school.
“This is gonna be fun.” I told her.
“I’m not so sure.” Jamie replied. “I always get nervous at new things. You know how much I hate new things and can’t make new friends. I’m only here because you were coming here as well.”
“I know sweetie. I’ll watch over you and help you like always. But you know high school is he last before you need to get out in the big world. You need to get out of your shell soon and become more courageous. I can’t help you every year of your life.”
“I understand, but for now please be with me. I feel that I’m not meant to be in this world. Everything I say or do go wrong. Rather I try to help people or do things on my own, I just can’t seem to do anything right unless I’m with someone. It feels like a curse and God or any of the gods/goddesses out there hate me.”
We walked through the school and there were tables everywhere and people jumbled every else where. Since Jamie and I already pre-registered, we got the short line.
“Take that geeks.” I said aloud yet no one but Jamie heard me. “Hello.” I said at the table. There was a middle-aged woman sitting at the table who looked up.
“You already registered?” she asked us.
“Yes ma’am. We both did.
“Your names?”
“I’m Sarah Matthews.”
“Matthews...Matthews. There you are. Miss Sarah Matthews. Read this page and sign at the bottom. Your name, miss.” She asked my friend.
“Uhh… Ohh… Miss Jam… I mean Jamie Heartstone.”
“Alright, H...H...H…, um… there you are. Your name sounds familiar. Are you related to…
“HEY! STOP THAT KID! GET BACK HERE OR YOU’RE GONNA BE EXPELLED.” A kid who was streaking ran past me, Jamie and the woman. Jamie fainted, I was stunned, and the woman just got angry. She got up to chase the dude as well. I signed Jamie’s paper, grabbed both our stuff, put the papers on the table, grabbed her and left the table.
Five minutes later, Jamie woke up in the nurse’s office from that shocking weirdness.
“You’re awake.” The nurse said. “Are you okay?”
“I think so. What happened?”
“Well, you fainted after you saw… that thing. Or should I say, that guy’s thing.” I answered.
“Don’t worry.” The nurse spoke up. “We captured that kid. He’s getting a week’s suspension, and he might need to do some community service as that is sort of a legal law he broke as well. Since you’re alright, hurry to class, or you might be late.”
I thanked her and we left. Our first two classes are the same, but we split after that. “I hope you can deal with after lunch as we separate after that. Here’s our first class. History, bleh.”
A New History class started, as you might as well expect it. Seating, role calling and then syllabus. Boring bleh.
Jamie Heartstone and Sarah Matthews, please come to the office.
And you know what happened next. We, 10th graders, still did that ‘oooo, someone's in trouble on the first day’ thing. Shut up kids, we’re in high school. Stop acting like elementary kids. That is when something weird happened.
BOOM! We hit a senior. And We, two, fell down and he dropped a few books.
“Hey, newbies, watch it! Where do ya think you’re going any...”
“STOP!” I heard someone scream and a girl ran very fast and stopped right in between the guy and us.
“Alright, everyone calm down. What happened?”
“These new geeky kids ran int me and…” the girl put her hand up to the dude’s face.
“Christy, all you did was drop your book. Nothing else is broken. Just pick it up and keep going. No need to go ballistic.”
“I never should have told you that my mom gave me that nickname. Stop calling me that. I’m no girl, and I told you only my mom can call me that.”
The girl seems to be energetic and with a smirky smile on her face seems to like joking around. I was wondering if she could, she, be his girlfriend or someone else?
“Hi! I’m Samantha Summers. You may call me Sammy. I’m a junior and sort of works with the office. May I see your school IDs?”
IDS? What IDs?
“We didn’t get any. Did you sign up?”
“We did, but that was when that naked kid interrupted…”
“OH! I get it. You must come to the office.”
“That’s where we’re going!” I heard Jamie speak up loudly for the first time. Whoa! Where did that come from?
“Calm down. Let me show you. This way.”
“Jamie, where did that voice some from?”
“I’m sorry, Sarah, I don’t know what happened. I guess nerves from what happened today with that guy and the naked kid.”
“That’s okay.” Sammy said. “High school either makes people show their true colors or changes them when they start, so no biggie.”
Sammy brought up to the main office.
“Sammy, what are you doing here? I gave you an errand.”
“These girls didn’t get their IDs yet.”
“Oh, you must be those girls. Go to room 02 there. And Samantha, get to the gym now.”
“Yes Ma’am…” She placed a fist to her heart and bolted off.
We got out IDs in the room but also saw that nudist kid in there as well.
“Sarah Matthews, here is your ID and, Jamie Heartstone, why does your handwriting look like Miss Matthews?”
“That was my fault. I signed her paper as she fainted from seeing… something creepy earlier.”
“Then we need to get a new paper and have Miss Heartstone sign it herself.”
Jamie signed her own name this time and got her ID. We placed them in our purses and we left the office. On the way back, we ran into Sammy again.
“Hey, kiddos. What’s happenin’ captain? Did ya get your IDs now? I sort of need to see them as well if I see new people wandering the halls with no passes.”
We showed them to her and as she saw the names, she puled out her U-Pid music device and played some music.
“What’s this?” I asked.
“It’s ‘Heartstone Break’. A duet of a guy and lady who were amazing, but lost their lives in a car crash.”
“They’re my parents!” Jamie said as she turned around and entered a room as our History class was in front of us.
Sammy looked at me with searing pains. “Tell her I want to apologize about that.”
I left Sammy for class. Heck, I didn’t even know that myself. I was always wondering what happened to her parents as she lived with her Uncle and Aunt. Maybe I should apologize as well.
A few months went by, and we started to hang out with Sammy more and even met a few more friends;
