"Is Mr. Wexford married?" Lexie asked, and she stared blankly at the classroom clock.
"No- I'm sorry- What?" I startle.
"Hey," she defended dramatically, raising her hands in mock surrender. "You answered too quickly to judge me. Besides, I'm still passing his class,"
"Please...Keep your deprived teacher fantasies between you and a03." Matthew sighed as he leaned back in his chair, his head tilted back, opening one eye and looking back at her "I'm deeply wounded that you'd think to hide such mysteries from me."
Lex laughed as she looked away from her eyes, back on the board and not on our teacher's supposed ring.
I look over to Micheal as he looks at the two of them with a rather bored expression on his face as he gags before leaning over to me "I say we throw some rocks at them after school" he mutters, a spark of mischief in his rather dark eyes.
"Don't you have an orchestra after school?"
I question. Unlike Lex, Mattheo or many other Year 12s in Manchester, we'd had been in orchestra together for 4 years until he moved to year five orchestra. Even if we were just friends, it hurt a lot more than that.
"You need to focus on your strings and not assault. We don't need your angst on the parking lot," I mumble back as Mr. Wexford continues on his lesson.
"Your loss...it's hard to believe I have great aim and a bow hold," He says with a crooked grin as I roll my eyes as the bell rings sending a loud slamming sound in the classroom. As loud as a bullet
The world stops and spins off its axis and soon I'm back there again, back in the dark closet with her blood under my nails. That won't leave.
Bile threatens to rise as she screams, my blood-stained hand covering my hand as the blood pulls under the door, soaking the brown carpet.
"Grove?" Matthew's voice startles me, the room practically empty as he looks at me, his eyes full of concern "You okay?"
I look down at my hands, my nails pressed and embedded in my skin, leaving red curves in my palm.
"I'm fine, just a little tired," I say, standing out of my desk and shoving a few books back into my backpack. My are footsteps brisk as I walk to the door looking over my shoulder, "I'll be home late, Cello practice"
"Ada-"
But I don't hear what he says next, as I run out the door
-----------
"The only thing we have to fear is fear itself- Franklin. D. Roosevelt,"
Micheal walks next to me on the cracked and crooked sidewalk tossing and catching a rock in his hand ".... we really could have thrown this at them-"
"Finch."
"Sorry, Sorry.... He could've taken it. "
I shove him; the rock rolling out of his hand and onto the street.
"Rude" he taunts
I scoff, a hint of a grin spreading across my face before I kill it off immediately and keep waking next to him as the sun goes down. Though we both were in a good area, it didn't mean we wanted to get caught in the dark.
Especially with him.
My parents were happy the first time Matthew brought home his
"New best friend,"
Which is fine, great even
But when that "friend" is Micheal Finch,
it's not so great anymore
Micheal was a permanent sarcastic egotistical presence in my life that I begged the Gods to get rid of
"Aren't you upperclassmen supposed to be good role models to us?" I question, my voice bitter.
Let's be honest, Matthew and Micheal were straight from hell and Matthew was my brother, so that says something hell, even Leo.
"Oh darling, if you believe that, you're in for a rude awakening."
He laughs as he shoves me toward my house and onto my walkway.
I stumble, feeling the flip in my stomach, trying very painfully to ignore the oddity still going through my brain
I roll my eyes and walk away, flipping him off
"Love you too, princess! See you later-"
I pause before quickly walking into the house, slamming the door behind me as I lean on the glass door, his laugh moving down the walkway, as I grip my stomach. "The fuck-"
"Ada?"
I freeze, forcing a smile that comes out more uncomfortable than sweet
"Oh, it's the devil's advocate". Placing my backpack and cello case down on the shoe bench.
Matthew leaned against the doorframe, "Ada-"
"I'm finding Matthew, really," I say with a small smile. "You don't have to worry so much-"
He laughs awkwardly, as he looks away "Well um, not that..." He mumbles "Micheal is staying over tonight ..."
My smile fades
"Why didn't I eat you in the womb..."
He raises his eyebrow. "Because we aren't twins?"
Damn it-
I sigh. "Just set nothing on fire, okay?"
I walk past him
"Got it, caption! " He yells up to me as I walk up the stairs falling onto my bed in exhaustion.
I know I'm being too hard on them after all, they'll just be in my brother's room.... usually... But what if that Bastard makes noise-
A grin far more psychotic than I meant it to be spreads across my face as I run out of my room to my cello-
I reach the doorway, scraping the cello on my back before it's plucked away from my grasp.
"Valda!" I turn towards the figure "I swear to God-" My mouth goes dry in an instant
"I was here for my shoes, however..." I watch as Micheal straps the cello case to his back "I thought I could be civil since your parents let me stay-"
"'Civil'" I scoff as I roll my eyes "Hand it over or till break the strings off your violin, deal?”
He laughs as my anger bubbles over, handing me the case. "Going for blood today, aren't we little violence?"
"My name is Adeline," I spit out
"I think I like my version better-"
"Oh, hi love!" a sweet voice says
God kill us all...
like he hears me, though he grins before turning to my mother, his face genuine and sweet
"Hi, Mrs. Grove! We were just talking about our practice tonight, right Ada?"
I smile sweetly as I grit out the words "Of course, he did... great"
Which I suppose could be accurate
My sadly naïve mother smiles as she looks at us. "I'm glad you guys are finally getting along... I'll be upstairs if you need me,"
"Yes ma'am." He says innocently.
I resist the urge to roll my eyes as she walks back upstairs, and he stifles a laugh with the back of his palm pressed against his lips as he looks down at me.
"If you utter a single word-" I spit out
"Never, princess.” He tosses the case to me “Enjoy your cello lessons,"
------------------------------------
Time: 1:26 am
"Princess…"
"Princess get up"
"My god this was a bad idea" Another voice rings out
I groan, rubbing the grogginess from my eyes
"What the fuck did you do now" I mumble as my eyes adjust to the darkness "We didn't do anything," Micheal says in a weirdly calm and cozy tone "...Well we didn't do anything yet"
Gods
"Leave me be, Finch"
"Just listen, Ada.." Matthew whispers
I sigh "...Fine"
And this, this is where I made my first mistake.
