"Come on boys hustle, hustle," David called out in attempt to sound like Coach Burnham. I assume the position in front of the QB, aka my friend Josh, as I waited for him to call.
"Down, Set, Hike." I throw the ball back to him and start on the move pushing back Lance, who was heavier set then I was and down to the 50-yard line, in translation down to the fifth cone.
"Josh Josh I'm open!" I call out to him waving my arms but he was a bit slow and got tackled by Lance and two other members of his team.
"Hey! Hey! Timeout, ball left the field." shouted Daniel. I run over and indeed the ball left the field and was nowhere in sight.
"Good going Josh! That was our last football!" accused Henry, who actually owned the ball in question.
"It's not my fault! This is two touch not tackle!" Josh exclaimed.
"You know that two touch isn't fun." Lance quipped.
"Guys guys calm down. Did anyone see where the ball went?" I asked trying to get them to stop attacking Josh, who brushed his fingers through his black hair before answering.
"Over the fence, just like the last three." I sigh, looking up at the fence that was not just a few feet taller than Lance, (who was a 6-foot monster of a football player) but had barbed wire lining the top to prevent people from climbing over. I rub the back of my neck in thought then look over to Henry, who was glaring at Josh the whole time.
"Henry, let me see your jacket," I tell him holding my hand out for it.
"You mean my corduroy? Ah hell no! My mother would kill me if something happened to it. This belonged to her brother!" He grabbed his jacket holding it close to him.
"Desperate times call for desperate measures." I insisted. Henry sighs in defeat and hands the jacket to me. I nod in approval. "Lance, can you throw this on the barbed wire? I am climbing over."
"Holy shit, Garrett is joining the Dark Side."
"Shut it Anakin." I glared at him before I started to climb. There was a chorus of woos and ohs as I climbed over the top scratching my leg only slightly as the barbs threaten to poke through my friend's jacket. I hop down with an oof and a roll.
"You okay bro?" Lance asked as I stood up looking at my leg. I give him a thumbs up before I start walking into the shrubs to find the ball, and maybe even the other three. As I continue to walk I hear a small voice, feminine and very soft,
"Help her," I look around curiously realizing that I was way too far from the fence. I turned to walk back to the group when another voice chimed in.
“She’s been gone for too long.”
“Help her.”
“Help who? Who do I need to help?” I asked. I normally didn’t talk to mysterious voices, mostly because I normally didn’t hear mysterious voices but something told me I have to. The sun beams that peaked through the branches grew wider and appeared to move. My eyebrows scrunch together curiously following them until I saw her.
It was like watching fire flow through the grass to the crown of her head, her skin tremendously pale and covered in dirt. I ran to her quickly and tapped her hand.
“Hey..” I continued to tap, “Wake up…” There was no response. I took my two fingers and checked for a pulse, I could barely feel it but she was warm, she still had a chance. I took a breath trying to calm down as I started compressions, taking a breath before I leaned down and placed my lips on hers. Nothing from my CPR classes could’ve prepared me to see color come to her skin, and her eyes to shine a bright blue as she took a breath, she goes to sit up quickly but quickly I stop her, “Woah, Woah!”
“Daniel?” She asked with an eyebrow raised and curiosity in her eyes.
“No, My name is Garrett and I am taking you to the hospital.” I quickly pick her up and head out of the woods.
