I don’t have to check that number,

When the phone rings late at night.

Cause I know on the other end,

A boy’s losing the will to fight.

So I ignore the weariness,

Cause he’s trying not to cry.

And when he asks me if he woke me,

It’s the one time that I’ll lie.

One the other end of the telephone,

He’s fighting for his life.

And the words that his daddy said,

Cuts deeper than a knife.

What am I supposed to do

When he calls me in tears?

I’ll stay up until the dawn,

Just to calm his fears.

Cause somewhere in his mind,

He’s seven once again.

Just a badly beaten child,

Who desperately needs a friend.

On the other end of the telephone,

Just to tell him it’s alright.

Memories of stolen innocence

From a four-year-old’s worst night.

Some may say I’m crazy,

But what would you do,

If the only one he trusted,

Was somebody like you?

On the other end of the telephone

Would you turn away?

Or would stay up all night long,

To hear what he had to say?

I’ve heard all kinds of horrors

About the man that he called dad.

Some nights I have to bite my tongue

Cause it makes me fighting mad.

I’ve talked him away from suicide

Had him put down the knife.

How could anyone make their child

Want to end their life?

While on the other end of the telephone,

The boy no longer weeps.

I listen to his soft whimpers

As he fades off to sleep

On the other end of the telephone.
