After getting some food in us, everyone retired for a mid-morning nap. I laid in my bed, the sun beating down on my face and the light sound of bass thumping from underneath me. I could hear Ethan snoring up a storm from the front of the camper and I hoped that after everyone woke up that everyone would be back to their normal, happy selves. Try as I might to get a little more sleep, I wasn’t having it. I never was much of a sleeper anyway; my thoughts kept me up most nights. It also didn’t help that every time I closed my eyes that all I saw was Marissa’s beaming smile, her sparkling eyes, and the way the sun glimmered off of that septum piercing. I was infatuated with her and I barely knew her; I tried to figure out what made her so different from the rest, but I couldn’t pinpoint it. It was almost on the tip of my tongue…

“Ash?” Taylor mumbled. I rolled over, peering back at where Taylor and Alex were curled up in their sleeping bags. “Do you wanna head out to the field?” Both girls were grinning at me and I smiled back. I shrugged with a nod, rolling off of my bed and stretching momentarily. I gestured back to Ethan with my thumb which earned me a glare from both girls. I held up my hands defensively and nodded.

“He can go fuck himself for all I care,” Alex yawned, standing up and grabbing a handheld mirror. The two girls fixed themselves up and wiped away the sleepiness on their faces with more makeup. I made my way outside of the camper where the sun nearly blinded me. I held my hand above my eyes to shield the blazing sun as I went to the cooler and grabbed a beer. I winced at the first sip, but took a few more chugs to remind my system that even though it tasted terrible, that it would be worth it later. Alex strutted out of the camper with a twirl as Taylor followed in her footsteps. I gave them a mockery applause to which they dramatically bowed and laughed.

“So, where’s Marissa?” Taylor questioned, a devilish grin on her face. On cue, the mention of her name sparked a blush to flood my cheeks. I shrugged as the girls crept up on me.

“Well, are you gonna invite her?” Alex pressed, leaning into me as I tried to finish my beer. I didn’t want to bother Marissa or take her away from her friends; I already felt like I was bugging her enough as it was.

“Ash, she’s totally into you and she’s probably just staring at her phone waiting for you to text her!” Taylor exclaimed, hanging on my other arm. I let my head fall back and sighed as loud as I could. I wet my lips, my heart started to race beneath my chest. I looked down at the girls looking up at me with their pleading eyes and I made the motion of taking a shot. They both grinned, rummaging through the cooler while I whipped out my phone.

We’re going to the field, wanna join us?

“Open up, Ash!” Taylor exclaimed, squeezing my cheeks and letting the burning liquor run down my throat. I coughed at the unexpectancy of it all, and Alex laughed, pouring some of the vodka into a water bottle and shoving it into her back pocket.

I was beginning to think you’d never ask. Meet you at the gates.

I read Marissa’s message, biting my lip to stifle my smile. I wrapped my arms around Taylor and Alex and led them to the gates for the field. As we neared the gate, my heart rate only continued to rise; she made me that way, even though I couldn’t wait for the moment I saw her again.

“Did you text Marissa?” Alex whined, tugging on my arm as we prepped to walk into the field. I looked down at her while she pouted and gave her a nod. Tayor started scanning the perimeter near the gate and she piped up, pointing over toward the left side.

“There she is!”

Marissa caught Taylor’s crazy wave and excitement and skipped over to us. A smile broke onto my face without a second thought and she winked at me.

“Hope we didn’t keep you too long,” Alex apologized, linking arms with Taylor and Marissa and she waved it off, willingly joining the arm chain she was forced into. I walked behind them, wondering why Marissa would rather spend time with us than her friends she came with.

“Do you want to stay in the back or try and squeeze our way to the front?” Taylor asked and Marissa let out a laugh.

“Back all the way! So much easier to get booze and get to the bathroom, plus we won’t be crammed in between dunk, sweaty people and we can sit on the grass!” she replied, plopping down on a patch of dead grass. I slowly sat down with her as Alex and Taylor exchanged glances and giggled softly.

“We’re gonna get some food and drinks, we’ll see y’all in a bit,” Taylor smirked, winking quickly at me as they galloped off. I watched them leave, biting the inside of my cheek before turning to look at Marissa who was smiling widely at me. She crossed her legs and let her arms fall into them.

“What’s your star sign?”

I frowned for a moment and she narrowed her eyes at me. I took a deep breath before replying.

Virgo, why?

She shrugged and smiled, rocking back while she held her knees and glanced up.

“I’m just into all that horoscope and astrological shit. Suddenly, she turned around so her back was facing me and she began lowering her pants. I immediately started to look away in shock, but then she pointed to very low on her back. I noticed the “tramp stamp” she sported was of a space-sort of scene with stars, a sun, and a moon. She hiked her pants back up and spun back around. I was positive she could see the embarrassing blush I had began to glow, but she didn’t acknowledge it.

Is that your only tattoo?

“Yeah, I haven’t found anything else symbolic enough to get permanently stained onto my body yet,” she answered with a shrug. I nodded, and typed again.

So, is my star sign pretty good? What’s your sign?

Like a kid on Christmas morning, she delved into all the details of who I was, and I was impressed with how accurate it was.

“You’re practical, loyal, gentle, but you can be very analytical at times too,” she explained, and I just gazed into her eyes and listened intently; I didn’t even care about the concert that was going to start soon.

“As for me, I’m a Sagittarius so I’m like, a crazy, optimistic, extrovert with a generous spell,” she laughed and I couldn’t help but smile.

I may not have known her that well, but I hadn’t seen her blush since I’d met her. When she read what I said, instantly a rosy glow filled her cheeks. She shook her head, handing my phone back to me.

“You’re just drunk, speaking of which, let’s go get some drinks,” she murmured, grabbing my hand and helping me up, and she held my hand and stood almost on top of me the entire walk to the beer tent and back.
