I lifted my hand, eyes squinting as I wiped the sweat beads from my forehead. We’d been standing outside with the sun beating down on us all day and not even the beer could cool us off anymore. I looked down at Alex who was pressed up on her tiptoes to try and see over all the people piled in front of us. I tapped her shoulder and she glanced up at me. I pointed to my shoulders, which earned me a grin and an eager nod. I chuckled, squatting down and letting her climb onto my shoulders.

“I’m gonna need to go to the bathroom soon,” my friend Ethan slurred, and I nodded. Suddenly, I felt drops of liquid falling onto my head and shoulders. I strained my neck to see Alex chugging a beer and I rolled my eyes playfully. I glanced back over at Ethan and nudged him. I was about to ask him when the next band was going to start, but as if on cue, music droned through the air. I joined in as much as I could with the cheering and screams from the people around me, but my non-existent voice wouldn’t have made a difference. Next thing I know, I’m being squished up against a bunch of sweaty, drunk people as the bass thumps through the ground below me. Ethan hands me a beer, which I tip towards him as a gesture of thanks before chugging it like my life depended on it.

“Hell yeah, Ash!” Taylor screeched, slapping my upper arm, tossing me another beer. I grinned and gave her a thumbs up as Alex began wiggling around and dancing on my shoulders.

A few hours later, we decided to take a break from standing out in the sun and retired to our campsite for a quick regroup. We were all drenched in sweat, but we weren’t bothered by it because we were all pretty buzzed or drunk. When we got back to the camp, the girls were quick to grab more drinks while also cooling down with some water while sitting inside the camper. Ethan and I grabbed a beer and sat outside under the camper listening to some music. It wasn’t uncommon for people to pass by and hang out for a while to listen to our music or just chill.

“What time should we go back out?” Taylor called from inside. Ethan glanced at me and I just shrugged, sipping on my beer and sliding my sunglasses down from on top of my head. Ethan got up and went inside to consult with the girls, but I decided to stay outside. It was hot, but it was too nice outside to not enjoy it while I could for a few days. As I finished my beer, I stood up to take care of it. As I went over to the cooler to grab a water bottle, I felt a hand on my wrist. I spun around and was met with a gorgeous blonde-haired girl staring at me. She was rocking a backwards ball cap in a black bikini top and incredibly ripped jean shorts. I was frozen in place, wobbling a little bit from my buzz.

“Bend down,” she demanded, and as confused as I was, I obliged. Next thing I know, she was a few inches away from my face and gazing into my eyes. It was only then that I realized she was fixing her makeup in my sunglasses, but I didn’t mind. I studied her crystal blue eyes, watching her pupils dilate ever so slightly as she focused on her makeup, the tiny freckles that dust her cheeks, the septum piercing she wears so elegantly, and her plump, red lips she was generously applying more lipstick to. She popped her lips a few times before her eyes actually met mine and she grinned. She pressed a kiss to my cheek and pulled away. She started laughing hysterically and I knew I was blushing. I went to lift up my sunglasses to get a better look at her, but before I could, she was skipping off down the path. While I’m lost in whatever just happened, the beer I had in my hand slipped and exploded on the ground, spraying beer all over me. I bent down to pick it up just as the camper door opened.

“What the hell is going on out here, Ash? I was gone for like two minutes,” Ethan chuckled as I stood up and faced him. A wild grin filled his face, while a stunned and confused look distorted Alex’s.

“Yeah, care to explain?” Alex scoffed, folding her arms across her chest. I sighed, licking my thumb and rubbing my cheek furiously. I walked over to Alex with my hands out. I frantically began signing to her that it was nothing, a girl, a drunk girl, came over and that was it.

Even in my buzzed state, I knew that Ethan had just fucked up royally. Alex’s jaw was dropped and she looked at me with tears in her eyes. I couldn’t sign fast enough, or she just didn’t care, as she dragged Taylor away from Ethan and me.
