Being lost is not what's scary, its what lay in the dark that people should fear. In the dark, you can't close your eyes for long before they pry themselves open. They have every reason to do so, with them closed, you stood no chance at seeing what was looking at you.
The spring thaw had begun and the land slowly began to come back to life after its slumber. New plants sprouted and there were new babies who had yet to explore the world. Spring is a lively time when the land takes a breath after being asleep for months. In a small no-name town, the thaw brought better soil for their crops and new saplings. It was time to celebrate.
With the thaw comes children of all ages ready to play in the sun again and explore the now lively area. There had always been few restrictions on the children because their parents were hard at work and they did not want the children to complicate things. A small group of children would always congregate on the edge of the fields and talk amongst themselves. They shared whispers of what the neighbours were doing and what the plans were for planting or harvesting. 633Please respect copyright.PENANAdiB85EnXPN
Over the course of time, these once little children became more grown, they had become strong enough to help their parents with the fields. Even with work, they always had their meeting at the edge of the fields to talk about this and that. 633Please respect copyright.PENANAZ1y6LyBeKT
One summer night, they decided to camp in the fields, they hadn't done that since they were much younger. Gathering their things, they set off to the far west corner of the fields and set up camp. As the fire crackled and burned hot, they told each other stories and reminisced. Sleep finally overtook them and they said goodnight to each other.
The entire house smelled of mold and rust. The windows were broken and the furniture looked as if it had been abandoned years ago. The dust bunnies had begun to repopulate and took over most of the small house. Looking around, the friends saw each other, thinking it was a joke of some sort. On the dusty table was a typed note telling them to hide as if their life depended on it. Figuring it was a joke, they hid. The air became cold and footsteps were heard coming down an unseen set of stairs. Heavy breathing occupied the room as the footsteps moved about. A scream brought everyone out of hiding to find one of their own being drug away by some mysterious force.
Startled, the group awoke and looked around, upon conversing with each other, they came to the conclusion that all of their dreams were due to the stories told the previous night. Looking around, they noticed that someone was missing, they figured they had chickened out or something so they packed their things and left. Back in the town, there was as much chatter and bustle as normal. The harvest season was soon to be upon them and they had to prepare. 633Please respect copyright.PENANAJCslKc1E8T
Again, everyone strong and old enough in the town began working on the fields and preparing storages for their bountiful crops. Exhausted, everyone was asleep before their head hit the pillow.
It was the same house again but this time it was a little bigger. It had a set of stairs near the door. The group decided to proceed with caution in hopes of finding their lost friend. Another note lay on the door ordering them to find a place to hide in that room like their life depended on it. They did as they were told knowing this was no joke, it was real. Again they heard the footsteps and the labored breathing of someone which none could see. That's when they saw the friend they thought they lost, standing in the doorway, something about the girl had changed though. She was not quite right, upon seeing her, someone made a run for her only to be carried away by her friend and an unseen figure.
Another day working was difficult when there were people who were missing. The town was small, so they just figured that they had been ill and decided they could not work. The group met again, it was only two of them left. Terrified they set out midday to investigate where they had camped just a few nights before. What they found was their own tracks from walking back and putting the fire out. 633Please respect copyright.PENANAZPheScZqYr
In the distance, a large mansion stood. Looking at each other they began towards the house, horrified that it might be what had taken their friends. When they entered the first thing they noticed was the dust and moldy smell. It hit them like a bullet train but they pushed passed and continued to explore further. There were no signs that anyone had been there and the more they explored the more sure that this had nothing to do with the night terrors. 633Please respect copyright.PENANAsQb1Llzrsi
Walking back to the town, they felt strange, like something was not right but they shrugged it off. when arriving back, a large feast was prepared in honor of the hard work everyone had put in. Sitting down, they thanked the gods for the bountiful harvest and wonderful food before they ate. A beautiful spread of vegetables and fruits and meat that fell right off the bone lay before them. Without hesitation they began to eat.
Once the meal came to an end, one friend noticed something funny in his mouth. Spitting it out, a small unicorn charm lay in his napkin. Showing it to his friend, they looked around expecting to see their other friends, then they realized that it had been cooked in the meat. Horrified they looked at each other then around them. This was the exact place that their friends had gone missing, it wasn't the mansion. It was their very own town that had devoured their companions, and now they were eating some part of the two girls. They noticed that the townsfolk began to look at the differently, they had hungry eyes.
