WHAT?

I was half expecting Mara

to be staring at me,

but instead I saw Connor’s

hazel eyes in my face.

I took a step back in surprise

and took a deep breath.

What?

It was a quiet word that

only he could hear.

He failed to hold back a laugh

and walked away toward

his group of snickering friends.

I felt the heat of anger and

embarrassment rising to

my cheeks.

Everyone in the hall just stared.

My knees were shaking and

I felt a lump start to form in my throat.

No. Not now. Not now.

I swallowed that lump in my throat

as Connor and his friends walked

away casually, as if nothing happened.

I know that it was a dare, but

the question remained…

Why? Why me?

I didn’t notice that Connor

looked back at me,

with a glint of concern

YO APRENDO (not really)

I slowly walked toward the classroom

once again,

at least this time I didn’t get

pushed.

My teacher Sra. Morales

is at the door,

but she didn’t see me get

pushed because if she did,

I know that something would’ve

happened to Connor.

He would deserve it, too.

Hola Fayth! Buenas tardes!

I barely hear her greeting.

Hola!

I respond with a little less

enthusiasm than her.

I’m still too busy thinking

about what happened

with Connor.

He and I were supposed to have

a future together!

What made him hate me?

I sit down in my desk

and place my backpack down

on the floor.

My pencil is in my pencil case

which is in one of the front

pockets of my backpack,

so I lean down to get it.

As I look through the case

to find my favorite pencil,

I hear giggles near me.

Right behind me are two

people who should never

have met.

Bailey and Hannah.

They are so annoying!

The two of them have every

class together, too,

because their parents think

that these spoiled brats need

each other to survive.

I look behind to the

desk that the two of them are

huddled at.

The desk is supposed to be

Hannah’s but Bailey always

talks to her before the bell rings.

I see Bailey’s phone case

so they’re probably looking at

something funny, to them at least.

The bell for class to start rings,

but the devils are still

giggling.

It hurts my ears to say the least.

Sra. Morales walks in and sees

them, but doesn’t do anything

to stop them.

Yet.

I hold back my own giggle

at the way that Sra. Morales

looks at the girls.

¿Qué tiene de divertido?

The girls look up at her.

What?

They ask with smiles

plastered onto their faces

Neither of them know

any spanish.

What did I say about phones

in this classroom?

Their smiles are gone,

but mine is growing.

Give me the phone.

W-we but… it-

Hannah tries to defend themselves.

Give me the phone.

I watch Bailey walk up to the

teacher’s desk with a scowl on her face,

and place the phone

right by a stack of newly printed papers.

Oooooooooooh

Goes the class,

me included.

At least one good thing can

happen in a day.
