How did I get into this situation..
Soon, the supply of oxygen I had was running short, and I needed a few seconds to breath. I looked around to know where I was, and fortunately I recognized the place.
I was in the 2nd level, the room to where the meeting is always held just on the level beneath. The hallway wasn't as wide as the upper level, and in the right of one corner, there was a set of stairs that could be seen.
I ran down to level 1 as I grasped on to the stairs' banister for support. I tried not to sound like a dying tortoise when I reached the room.
I opened the wood paneled-door with all my energy left, but no-one has noticed my presence. They were all so quiet and frozen that I wondered if this was the club I walked into, or if it's really just a military camp in disguise.
"Dominique. Look at me," the club leader said, inching forward to the girl who had her head down the entire time, "Where is your partner?"
"I don't have one."
"What do you mean you don't have one? Tell me, if you wanted to join the competition so much, then wouldn't you have bothered to actually look for one-" He was then interrupted by the sudden sound of my voice.

I closed the door shut, and kept my hands in my pockets, walking to where Alaina was standing. If I had known that she would be the one in trouble because of my choice. .
"And what is this guy doing here?" he asked the person beside him, undoubtedly ignoring my last response or just me in general, "Don't tell me-"
"Like I said, I'm this girl's partner," I looked at Alaina, giving out messages asking for her to play along through, hopefully, telepathy.

She smacked my back, and laughed in an awkward manner, "Because of you, I had to lie and say I didn't have a partner and-"
I held on to her wrist and acted as if I was the one innocent here, "YOU! Why are you blaming me, you stupid?! You were the one who came to my apartment at 2am last night asking me to-"

Josh, who was in front of us, stared at me with a bleak expression for so long that someone had to remind him to get on with the announcements.
I wanted to say 'how'd it feel being like trash for once' in his face, but nah, he always was anyways.
He sighed, "Let's end our meeting now. Anywhom, the partners are confirmed so I'll be pinning all the info. in the bulletin board tomorrow. You guys have a few days to 'absorb' the information," He then put the papers he was holding down, "and just so you know, there's no backing out. The way he said it and the expression in his face seemed like the last part was aimed directly at me. If words could kill, though, that certainly didn't.
Everyone replied with a listless 'yes', and went off in their separate paths with their partners. Slowly, the room became empty, and Alaina and I were the only ones left.
The first few seconds were a bit awkward, but that seemed to have disappeared when I turned to face her.
"Thank you Camilo," she smiled as she patted my shoulder gently.
"You don't have to thank me," I assured her, and was the first to take a few steps to the door, "I'll walk with you to your home. Let's go?"
She nodded and picked her bag up, "Yeah. Thank you."

"Hey, Camilo?" She waved her hand in front of my face.

"I wanted to say thank you for earlier. Say, I thought you said you didn't want to take part?" She said, "What made you change your mind?"
"I don't know myself," I relaxed my stiff shoulders, "But, that isn't important now."

I faced her with curious eyes, "Why do you want to join so much in the first place?"

As she left me by the bus stop, the afternoon breeze became chillier. I put my hood up as the wind was blowing my hair up to my eyes.
I stood up from my seat, and stretched my arms before walking to the path that was nearest to my apartment.

I thought as I crossed the pedestrian street before stopping in my tracks as I remembered.
"SHI*!" I ran back to school, remembering that I promised that guy we will be going home together.
Meanwhile in school...
"STUPID CAMILO HARRIS! I'M GOING TO KILL YOU!"
A voice that was coming from the room of the acting club shouted, disrupting the janitor from cleaning.
"Kid, it's past school hours. Go home," the old man had said, tired from having to put up with students screaming all day.
