At first, I had though running away was a great descision, until I saw the monster. Let me fill you in for a second: I ran away from my abusive mother, and was making my way to a homeless shelter in the centre of New Jersey. My original plan was to ask for a foster family at the Town hall, but as I rounded the corner into one of the main streets I stopped dead. A beast was blocking the way, she looked pretty normal from her head to her waist, only that she was hideous and that her skin had a weird green glow. It was her bottom that frightend me the most. Instead of legs, she had a tail of a snake, splitting in two, so she had two worm like "legs". She was carrying a net, and in the other hand a spear. I couldn't tell why she was there, or if she was even real. I stood there, frozen, my heart beating in my throat. I backed away slowly, until the creature froze aswell. Her head snapped in my direction and a cruel smile bloomed on her face. My legs were trembeling from fear, and could barely hold me upright. The snake-lady laughed, although it was more like a hiss.
'Well well,' she murmured. 'Look what we have here.' She glided towards me, spear and net at the ready. I clutched my backpack, knowing I had no way of defending myself. The lady hissed again, and I saw her tongue was also like a snake.
'It'll be great to taste some yummy little halfblood again.' the thing whispered. Halfblood? What on earth was that supposed to be? I let my backpack glide off my shoulder, ready to swing it at her if I needed to. I looked around desperately, why was no one here?!
She came closer. 'Don't know who your scum of a godly parent is do you?' she hissed.
Godly parent? I asked myself. I took a deep breath and said, trying to hide my fear. 'I hope you're not talking about my mom, she is far from godly.' The snake hiss-laughed.
'Well it doesn't matter,' she said. 'You all taste the same anyway' and she lunged at me.
I dived away just in time, and lashed out with my backpack. The snake blocked it with her spear and threw her net. I jumped away just in time again, but with her other arm, the thing slashed me with her spear. I pressed my hand against my cheeck to stop the bleeding and ran away, but the lady was faster than I thought. I need something to slow her down, I thought and looked around again. There. A bucket of waterballoons, left out by the children who played with it in the summer a few weeks ago. Now it was fall, and the balloons were about to burst. I sprinted towards the bucket, grabbed a balloon, aimed and threw it right in her face. I started bombarding her with balloons until they were all gone. The snake-lady cursed in a language I somehow understood, I realised I had no ammunition anymore and ran for it again, snatching with me a large stone, the size of my fist. I stuffed it in my pocket and ran towards the centre of the town, which, as I hoped, was crowded with people and cars. I thought the snake-thing would stop her attempt at murder, but I was dissapointed. Drained from water, she glided after me. I had to think fast, I scanned the area and noticed the crosswalk. An idea popped up in my head and, realising how much risk I was taking, I headed for the white stripes. I had luck, the light turned to green the moment I arrived and I jogged to the other side of the road. The thing slowly crept up to the sidewalk, but the light sprang to red just as she wanted to glide over the road. Between the cars I saw flashes of her angry face, and my hand squeezed the stone, my last asset. The cars stopped, I looked at the sign, and it had lit up green. The snake thing crept up the crosswalk, hissing.
'Any last words, little demigod?' she asked.
I pulled the rock from my pocket and said. 'I don't know what you are talking Lady,' I said calmly. 'But if we ever meet again, know that I am not a quitter.' I saw the big truck from the corner of my eye, and threw the stone. The rock hit her in the face and she stumbled back. She was about to say something when she realised the truck wasn't lowering his pace. Looking at his phone, the truck driver was completely oblivious to the favor he was doing me. I looked away as the lady screamed of shock, and got crushed underneath the wheels. All that was left of her, was some gold dust and a single fang, which rolled up to my feet. I pocketed the fang, covered my bleeding cheeck again and got out of there as fast as I could.

'Lils?' someone put a hand on my shoulder and I let out a little yelp from fear. Not another monster, not now! I turned around and looked at the worried face of my friend Ryder.
'Woah, calm down!' Ryder put his hands up to show that he wasn't gonna do anything. 'It's me, don't worry.' He said calmly, smiling down at me. Ryder looked the same as he always did, he was taller than me, had dark, messy hair and brown eyes. What was most noticible of him, was his skin. Ryder had Vitiligo, when the pigment in his cells would clump up, causing him to have dark blotches all over his body. He has told me this was the reason he ran away, because he got bullied a lot for it. Ryder was a great person, always calm and kept himself cool, but he could be funny at the same time.
'Hey Ryder.' I exclaimed, a bit embarrased. Whenever I got crept up on, I jump up like I just did. I can't get it out of my system. Ryder examined my face like he always did.
'You alright?' he asked. I nodded as a response, but Ryder frowned. 'No, you're not.'
'What?' I replied. 'Yes I am, I promise.'
Ryder shook his head. 'No you're not,' he repeated. 'What's up? Be honest.'
Add that to the embarrasment list, but I was used to it. You never can hide anything from Ryder, he always knows when something is up. So I told him what was on my mind. Not about the monsters tho, that was a secret. Ryder put his hand on my shoulder again.
'Some people just need a high five, Lily'
I frowned. 'How would a high-five help my abusive mother?'
Ryder grinned. 'I wasn't done. Some people just need a high five. In the face. With a chair!' He said as if it was the most normal thing in he world. I burst out laughing and Ryder chuckled too.
'What's so funny cow?' Someone called from behind us. The smile faded from Ryders face as we both turbed around. Davies and Hamilton Greene, the local rich kids and 1st class troublemakers. Their favorite past time was looking for Ryder and terrorising him, like monsters terrorised me. The Greene's advanced on us, and Ryder looked at me. I could read the look on his face.259Please respect copyright.PENANAiTo9FUc32l

I shook my head and stayed at his side. Davies chuckled, he was taller than his brother Hamilton, who was short and stumpy.
'What are you doing here Montecello?' Davies said. 'Why are you not in the field with the other cows?'259Please respect copyright.PENANA82YIz1K7uE
Hamilton laughed and Ryder gritted his teeth.
'In case you haven't noticed,' He snarled. 'I am not a cow.'
'Oh yeah, What is this then?' Hamilton poked into Ryders cheek. 'Seems like a cow skin to me.'
Ryan pushed his hand away. 'It's basic science,' he explained calmly. 'You know, the thing that actually smart people invented?'
I wasn't planning on helping Ryder, he can care for himself perfectly well. But as I saw the rage in Davies' eyes, I knew it was time to step in.
'Just leave Ryder alone,' I said, raising my voice. 'Move on with whatever your life is or something.'
Davies and Hamilton laughed. 'So you need your little girlfriend too-'
They stopped laughing and their eyes filled with fear. They gave a little yelp and ran away. I frowned, I wasn't that scary, was I?
'Uh, Lily?' Ryder sounded frightened.259Please respect copyright.PENANAJMesRXQHAf
I turned around and stared right in the eyes of a huge monster.
