You know me, I was the one in high school who was the football captain, or the basketball champion. I was him. One who was always spring fling king. The one everybody knew, the one everybody talked to. I was also the one behind doors struggled, not because of money, but because I was the trouble maker of the family. I used to steal, cheat, lie, buzzed driving, or smoke behind the school. I used to do all those things, but now that I'm in college I do other things. But pretend you don't know that.
I had this girlfriend Ana, who, I don't know she was popular in high school, and we've been dating since high school. But she's getting pushier in my life, and I really don't need that. I don't really care about her anymore, she tried to control my life and stalk my location and my social media. She also claimed that I liked her best friend because we hung out together but that's because she doesn't have any time for me. When we do hang out it is all about her. She doesn't show me attention. I mean my father just died from a drug overdose and she doesn't seem to care. So I'm here in this bar, drinking alone because I don't have anybody to talk to or anybody to listen so i will just drink the pain away.
I just really wish the person over here would stop coughing and sneezing. I find that disgusting and just irritating. I'm trying to drink, it's not like it's a restroom, and I don't want to get sick.
"Another round of vodka?" Asked the brunette bartender.414Please respect copyright.PENANAAySIF966fK
"I think, yes. Bring it on." I slurred. I was already red-nosed from my last 10 shots of vodka and right now I just wanted to be told that everything was going to be alright and that my father hadn't overdosed, but that it was a dream. But it wasn't so I kept on slamming shots of vodka and the bartender kept checking up on me.414Please respect copyright.PENANApgjLQcdDwS
"You know, there are better things to do than slam shots all night. You could explore the world go spelunking or scuba diving or anything. Just get your head out of the I need to drink the pain away mindset" she said to me with such inspiration. "It doesn't work, trust me I've tried." At this point I was feeling feverish and nobody else has said that to me before. My eyes widened as I thought that she was correct, I can't drink the pain away. I got up and trumbled my way to the door as to hope that everything was going to be okay. I was seeing double vision and then that's the last thing I remembered until this happened
"Wake up wake up", I felt somebody jerk my body.414Please respect copyright.PENANAl3TdwjoEOK
I could taste blood in my mouth414Please respect copyright.PENANAiHfOmonOGt
"What happened?"414Please respect copyright.PENANAkk8I4BeNfF
"You fell and hit the table, but sir I don't want you to move because you could have cervical spine injuries and other unknown injuries in the region as well."414Please respect copyright.PENANAr3h5BNRZ87
"Okay"414Please respect copyright.PENANAY65KJXgIJk
"Now I need you to wiggle your toes, can you wiggle your toes."414Please respect copyright.PENANAxOuSycVVhr
"Why wouldn't I be able to?" I asked curiously.414Please respect copyright.PENANAfZviDZius4
"Because you have glass in your back sir. " We have to take a look at that, and I need to make sure you aren't paralyzed because when you hit the table you toppled backwards and hit the floor like a sack of potatoes as I was told by this kind lady."414Please respect copyright.PENANAYxgTszs1mB
"Who?"414Please respect copyright.PENANASnPoGjdLTM
" I guess her name is Ness" he pointed towards her.414Please respect copyright.PENANA9lKeM9oO4M
"I'm nothing but a kind stranger to this young man" she corrected the EMT.414Please respect copyright.PENANANBt0MNwrez
"Sir, is there anybody you could call?"414Please respect copyright.PENANABrLC1fQ8yg
"No, my father died of a drug overdose and my mother ran away when I was little." I saw the empathy in his eyes.414Please respect copyright.PENANApoegvpy7ck
"Well we need someone to come with us, you have a lot of trauma." He explained the injury spots414Please respect copyright.PENANA7ngkBTuKsH
"I'll do it" I turned to see Ness, the brunette bartender.414Please respect copyright.PENANAxVdMuiOcVB
"You could be paralyzed sir, we have to remove the glass and we need somebody to take care of you if so. Can she handle the responsibilities" the EMT gave me the look. The look that says this is serious414Please respect copyright.PENANA1decz3KDy3
"As long as you don't mind him staying in this bar as I work" she piped in.414Please respect copyright.PENANARoZhojPqWr
"I mean it's not safe but if it's the best you have, we have to go with that" he clarified.
It was around 2am and Ness closed the bar early to come with me to the hospital. We were driving to a trauma center. Which was very far away, so I started to freak out and blacked out. When I came to Ness told me I had just had a seizure and I didn't know what caused it. The paramedics must have given me something because I don't remember much afterwards.
I started to flinch because I was in pain and the road was very bumpy. Ness looked at me with such care. She was telling me about her cousin who has spina bifida and she would have issues with her back and how she worried about her. Her eyes were watching me and she had empathy in her face. She looked at my hand and questioned me.
"Is it okay if I hold your hand?" Asked Ness414Please respect copyright.PENANADPKHfgEzls
"Why?" I questioned. I didn't know why she wanted to hold my hand it seemed kind of weird to me, but she must have been in shock, so I said414Please respect copyright.PENANAdySmKadaya
"Sure."414Please respect copyright.PENANALCr2EoByf7
Then I fell asleep, again. When I woke up we were at the trauma center. I swear to God that it must have been a 2 hour drive.
They rushed me in and I stared at the ceiling, and that's all I could see. They didn't want me to look anywhere else. I was being prepped for surgery. They had to do some brain surgery and they had to try and safely remove the glass from my back. I told them that I had been drinking and they asked when my last drink was
"What time is it?" I questioned.414Please respect copyright.PENANAdnRL35ypoT
"5:30 in the morning sir" answered the doctor.414Please respect copyright.PENANA3HMbp6w5YZ
"It was 2am when I had my last drink." After I said that the surgeon looked at his crew, in such disgrace414Please respect copyright.PENANAktAgTZFZDu
"Sir, you can't have surgery, you're stomach is still to the point of aspiration. We have to wait three hours."414Please respect copyright.PENANAp8jc0lvPDb
"What? No. I might need this surgery" I exclaimed. 414Please respect copyright.PENANA40acdHbXDd
"Sir, it's too risky. I am not going to lie to you either. To the extent that your brain and back are damaged, you might not even survive it. Even if you do it will take a lot of physical therapy for your body to remember since it hit your motor nerve in your brain. There is no point. It won't help. You can still walk, but sometimes it might be painful."414Please respect copyright.PENANAG27NCM5but
"Just prep me anyway, I got 3 hours to not eat anything right? To make sure that I am able to have normal motor functions?" Ness eavesdropped on us. Then interrupted.414Please respect copyright.PENANAwzJdlqkfeV
"I can help make time go by faster" she exclaimed. "I can read to him, tell him about all of my bartender stories and that will keep him occupied."414Please respect copyright.PENANASA8QUFk5QP
When I looked at her my heart melted, however, I felt bad because I didn't want her to think I was using her. "This woman that I barely know, wants to help me through this because of her cousin who has spina bifida." I thought to myself.414Please respect copyright.PENANADv7T96fg9k
Ness was holding my hand and she didn't leave my side, even to use the bathroom. She just kept telling me stories about how her cousin has muscular issues and how she wasn't supposed to walk but found a way to do it.414Please respect copyright.PENANAfMWRCcCI2T
The three hours passed by so fast as I talked to Ness about my past and she told me of her past. Her father used to make her feel bad whenever she was happy. Not only that, but we shared similar interests.
"you can walk?" questioned the doctor as he saw me get up and move.
"yes, I guess I have an angel watching over me!" I concluded.
"you have to stay a couple more nights, then I can let you go home! I just need your wife to fill out some paperwork." the doctor excitedly said.
Ness was ecstatic to hear of my recovery, that what the doctor said flew over her head. Ness held my hand and she held back tears. Somehow everything felt weightless until my past walked in.
"Ana, what are you doing here?"
"I stalked your location on Snapchat, and who is this whore? Are you cheating on me?"
"Ana, you don't make me happy, but this is the bartender who helped me drink the pain you inflicted on me away." She continued to listen to me.
"I don't want you in my life in any way, anymore. You're a toxic person and I need to do better for myself than the way you've been treating me. I deserve better than you. When you treated me badly I thought it was normal, but now I'm breaking away from everything that you taught me. I'm cleaning my slate and starting new. But no, I'm not a cheater."
"But, Travis. I love you"
"Love doesn't change the fact you don't trust or believe me. You don't seem to care about anything anymore. I can't be with somebody who doesn't have any ambition."
