It's not every day you see someone with pink hair and cat ears. Actually, you hardly ever see that. Except for today.
She understood why everyone was staring. All of them wondering, did I just see those fake ears move?
Why, yes. Yes, you did.
Their eyes were on her like feathers and glue. She nervously sweats a little and heads straight for her locker. She didn't like this, no, not one bit. It made her so very nervous and it sparked her nerves on fire.
Spinning in her code quickly she reaches up to grab her science notebook and all her papers fall out, flying everywhere.
How embarrassing, she thinks as she crouches to pick them up. Sighing and trying to organize them again she doesn't notice the other hand helping her until a small stack was handed to her.134Please respect copyright.PENANAixYEyyEnfv
"Oh." She says softly. "Thank you."
"No problem." Said the girl with black hair in two high buns. "I'm Avery." Avery holds out her hand and she tentatively shakes it. She must have been dared or something, or maybe she just wanted a closer look at the pink cat girl.
"Lorei." Shaking her hand once and then dropping it. She stands up and holds her papers to her chest.
"Sick ears." The other girl says simply and all she does is nod. It seems as if she were correct.
"Cats are awesome. Everybody else sucks."134Please respect copyright.PENANAjyBMndeBQO
These words from Avery cause Lorei to look up abruptly. No freak, no mutant, and no monster. Just the simple comment that she is cooler than everyone else?
"What did you say?" She asks a bit skeptical if she heard her right.
"Cats rule and everyone drools."134Please respect copyright.PENANAv8pj9nc5q8
She is quiet for a second before smiling widely. "I agree. Some people just suck but you seem pretty cool."
Avery laughs. "I'm glad you think so."
The bell rings and Lorei looks up as if it were merely an inconvenience. Sighing she says "I should probably head to science."
"Okay, I'll see you!"
And that was the story of how she found her best friend. Over the years they were inseparable, each of them being a bridesmaid in the other's wedding. When both of their husbands passed and they were on their funeral beds they held hands like sisters and waited for the next chapter in their story.
