In the world of Cleovania, there lies a kingdom of angelic messengers. They deliver scrolls filled with information for the human kind below them.
No one knows where this magical race came from, but for many years now they have been praised by the human race for their loyalty.
These creatures are named Angels, even though they are not connected to a godlike being.
They resemble humans but have small white horns and sparkling white wings. The arms of many are tattooed with the words of their ancestors.
The ancestors who spoke in symbols, built a world in the clouds, fought against races superior to themselves, and finally discovered the arts known as magic.
Eltova is a newly hired messenger who is making their journey to Neocia, a small village atop a snowy mountain.
"Oh Eltova, it seems the day has finally come. You have been given the opportunity to be a messenger of the royal family."
"You sound extremely surprised by that."
"Of course I am. It feels like it was only yesterday that you were writing all those letters to-"
"Mother, please!"
"Oh, I'm sorry. I'm just worried the creatures down there might be trouble for you."
"We were taught how to fight in the Traveller Courses. It will be fine, and I'm sure humanity will defend me if I can't do it myself."
"Right. I guess you should be heading off then."
I left out the front door of my comfortable home and headed towards the diving point. "Are ready to journey to the world below?"
"Of course, my majesty!"
"That confidence is praiseworthy. I'm sure you will come back without a single bruise on you!"
"I don't know if I'm that confident."
"Eltova, there is nothing to fear. There have only been three deaths ever recorded. This is a very important scroll, it will change how we live forever."
"Are you sure I should do it? I feel like this is a job for the ones who are already elite."
"It is. If you succeed, I will promote you as an elite myself. Once you're amongst them, you will learn how to use a holy blade."
I stood on the edge of the kingdom and spread out my wings. I dived, downwards I travelled with strong wind beating against my face.
As I neared the water, I pulled up, gliding across the sky. The creatures below me looked like specks of dirt.
The mountain was too high to land directly on the peak. As I neared the ground, I heard the sound of something being launched.
As I saw it headed straight for me, I pulled upwards once again. The rocket scraped against my wing.
I crashed into the side of the mountain. I saw someone walking towards me before I blacked out.
I woke up inside a house, the cackling of fire beside me seemed so familiar. I got up from the red sofa I was sleeping on.
"Great, it seems you're still alive. I don't believe I watched an angel fall from the sky. It was quite a sight to behold."
It was a human girl, likely in her twenties. Her clothing gave me proof that I made it to Neocia. "Are you heading out?"
"I'm sorry, I wish I could have done more for you. I assume you're here to deliver a message. If that's the case, just keep going north through the village."
"Did you happen to see what attacked me?"
"No, my apologies. I just know it came from the forest biome in the east. It was a long distance shot, but I'm sure it didn't go unnoticed."
She tucked in her scarf. "You can stay for as long as you need to, but be sure to deliver that message."
"Right."
I never got the girl's name, and it bothered me as I made my way to the castle. As a messenger, I was going to make sure she received a great blessing for saving me.
"It wasn't me, I swear!"
As I entered the castle, I was greeted by a village soldier who was pushing a prisoner in shackles.
"Oh, it's you! You're the messenger who was attacked, right?" the soldier asked. "Uh, are they the culprit?"
"Yes, they are." the soldier held out a bag with a wide variety of rockets. "I'm sorry, I mistook you for a dactyl."
"Impossible. I'm more bright and elegant than those flying rats. You know the price for attacking messengers. Get them out of my sight."
I made my way to the throne room. "You are right on time. What have you delivered to humanity today?"
"A scroll, written by the king of the clouds themself."
"Wonderful. You may return home now messenger. Tell your king the message was delivered successfully."
As I returned back to the clouds, I was given the messenger's badge. "Congrats Eltova. You're now an official member of the Cleovania Elite Messengers."
Back in the village of Neocia, the king opened the scroll, his great defender looked over his shoulder in curiosity.
"My lord, this is-"
"Yes, my knight. I feared this day would come. The king of the clouds has finally decided to wage war with humanity."
"I thought they were-"
"Pacifists? They do look like the type, but they have been planning to take their land back for years now."
"Are you saying that angelic race used to live on land?"
"They did more than just live here, they created it. The soil, the air, the flames, and the water we drink."
"My god, do we even stand a chance?"
"We succeeded once before but..."
"What is it, my king?"
"...I fear that they might've let us win on purpose. I think they were amused by our kind, and decided to live alongside us."
"This is too much to take in for one day. I'm heading off to bed."
"I understand. I will see you in the next morning."
