I fed the fire, sparks danced as the fire started to grow once more. I felt the warmth graze my face before I picked myself up and started setting the table. Father would get back from sowing his lords field soon. We didn’t make much money since we only had father and Henry working, poor Henry he was only 7 and he had to get up at unruly times to plow the fields for his feudal lord. I started setting the table when mother came into the room “Scarlett, dear we seem to be running low on food we might have to start rationing,” she said in a sorrowful tone while assisting me in setting the table, I hated when we had to ration, it always left me feeling hollow in the stomach. At least I didn’t have to eat rats like the people on the streets, they had lost their houses because King Charles XVI commonly kicked people out of their homes so he could tear them down to make room for his castle. It was sad really not to mention what happened to those who resisted, I’ve seen firsthand what happens hangings, burnings, and beheadings, were common punishments for it but there were so many others that were done when the king was in a really bad mood. Including so many other execution methods and even torture, not to mention the sickness going around. I snapped out of my daydream and continued setting the table father and Henry slipped through the door “Scarlett, Matilda I missed you!” he sat into his chair “Scarlett!” Henry cheered. I sat while mother brought the food “I apologize but we have to ration we can’t afford more food right now” she sighed, while she took her place we ate in bitter silence. All of us yearned for a better life although it would never change, we would stay in the conditions we were in for the rest of our lives.
