This time, I found myself in an old office. As I looked around, I could see Nazi banners and a very angry man. He had a strange moustache. I was getting tired that the magic book would not send me back to my real parents. I learned my lesson and promised to always pay attention in class. I just missed my family so much and wanted to be with them. I am sure that they missed me too.
As I looked around the office that I was in, it was like I was in an old black-and-white movie. It took me a bit of time for me to realize where I was. It was Nazi Germany! That explained the Nazi flags and the old things that belonged in a museum. The man sitting behind the desk must have been Hitler himself. Generals were trying to get his attention as he was looking down at a map. I could not believe how unlucky I was. The book transported me back to World War 2. On top of that, I was in a nazi office. These people did not know that they would end up losing the war. I was sent back to the wrong team. The Nazis were one of the most evil regimes the world has ever seen. Why did the book send me here?
I heard one of the generals tell Hitler that his niece was here and everyone looked at me. This made my heart slump and I could feel an anxiety attack coming on. I looked at Hitler. He seemed so frail and old. I could see that one of his hands was shaking uncontrollably. His moustache looked ridiculous and it looked as if he had a bad haircut. It was hard to believe that this man was the most evil man that the world ever had seen. Hitler was responsible for some of the worst crimes against humanity. He tried to kill all the Jews. He went to war with everyone. I remember the teacher telling me that Hitler was a bitter man who hated a lot of people. He caused so much bloodshed in the world and destroyed families and people's lives. No one ever had anything good to say about Hitler or the Nazis and I was standing in an office with them.
To make things worse, I was now Hitler's niece. Did this mean that I was evil as well? I would be an eyewitness to all the crimes the Nazis did. I could never live with myself if I was also responsible for innocent people being killed. I wondered if I could use my position as Hitler's niece to make things better. Maybe I could make Hitler a better person. I could show him that what he was doing was wrong. I could tell him it's easier to be nice to a person than hate them. The problem was that I was just a little girl and this man was just as evil as the Devil himself. Still, I know that I could not participate in the work of the evil nazis. I knew that I could not keep my mouth shut. This was bound to get me into a lot of trouble,
As I was deep in my thoughts on how I could hear a lot of noises and screaming outside. The office where I was started to shake and tremble. Hitler was told by one of the generals that the Russians were bombing the city again. This commotion did not last very long, but it was enough for the men in the office to be very quiet. I went to the window to look out. The view of Berlin shocked me. It was in ruins! It looked as if every building was damaged and there was only rubble in places where a building once was. People were walking around. They looked so unhappy and dirty. I felt sorry for them. It was not their fault that Hitler started a war, and now the ordinary German people were suffering.
Hitler saw me at the window and told me to stand back from the window. He started shouting and screaming at me. I was afraid of this verbal onslaught and started to cry. Hitler calmed down and called me to his desk. He explained that a Russian sniper would love to kill his niece. I had to be very careful. I looked at the most evil man in the world and said in the sweetest voice that I had that he could stop this war. This did not go well as Hitler started screaming and shouting that the war was not over. Throughout history, many German generals were in a situation that was worse than Germany was in now. They were brave and did not give up. At the end of the day, they won and had a huge victory. Hitler said that this would happen again. Germany would end up defeating the Russians and Americans. I did not respond. Not only was Hitler evil, but he was also crazy and disillusioned.
When Hitler calmed down, he told the Generals to move everyone down to the bunkers. So we went to the bunkers that were under the ground. Here we would be safe from the bombings. The bunker area was a huge complex with rooms and offices. There was a canteen and kitchen. It was like a city under the ground. I hated the bunkers. There was no sunlight and the air was strange. Everything was concrete. Still, it was better than getting a bomb dropped on my head. I lived in the same area as Hitler did with his girlfriend Eva. Eva was a beautiful woman but she was very bossy. She told me to stay in my little room until I was called. Before she left me, she told me that Hitler did not need a little girl pestering him.
When Hitler did have time, he told me that I would be safe in the bunker. He tried being nice and told me there was a lot to explore, and that there would be other children here as well. What Hitler did not know was that I knew a lot about him. I knew that he had killed millions of Jews. I know he did a lot of evil things. The magic book may have decided that Hitler was my uncle, but that didn’t mean I had to like or respect him. I told him that while we were safe down here, many innocent people were being bombed above. Thousands were being killed. I reminded Hitler that he was their leader. He needed to protect them. We were just hiding under the ground. Hitler got agitated at me and told me that I was only a little girl. What would I know? I could have argued with him, but I was also afraid. If Hitler didn’t care that he killed so many people, what would he do to me? It was obvious that he had no respect for human life or how people felt. I told him that I was going to explore.
It didn’t take me long to find the other children. There were 6 children and 5 of them were girls. They were all in the same family. They were wearing the nicest clothes and the girls even had ribbons in their hair. They told me that we should explore together. So we went from room to room to see what each place was. At the infirmary, the boy was teasing a nurse. She must have been very annoyed because she slapped him. Then the oldest girl scolded the nurse and asked her if she knew who they were. Goebbels was their Dad and I was Hitler's niece. The nurse went white as a sheet after being told who she slapped. You could nearly see her trembling with fear. When I told the Goebbels children that she should not have frightened her, they just shrugged their shoulders and said that we should continue exploring. I went back to the nurse and told her that she should not be afraid.
I went to Hitler once again. Goebbels was reading his horoscope. Hitler explained to me that he believed in Horoscopes and they would help him decide how to defeat his enemies. I could not believe that Hitler who was one of the most powerful men in the world was basing his decisions on horoscopes. Thousands of people were being hurt because he believed in horoscopes. Hitler reminded me once again of the great German figures in the past when there seemed no hope.
I could hear the distant noises far up of the Russians that were once again bombing the city. How could Hitler be so blind and think there was hope?
