“Alithea, will you go to the elemental ball with me?” I asked nervously, his palms getting sweatier by the minute. I felt like my hydrogen power was going to show up and set her hair on fire, and the oxygen inside me would do no help in controlling it. Oxygen is a supporter of combustion, after all.
Alithea’s eyes widened, and she couldn’t help but scream out in delight, “YES!”
I sighed in relief. “Wow… I-I…thank you?”
Alithea chuckled, brushing a stray lock of hair off her face. “We’re best friends, Ferris, of course I’d go with you, but… now that I think about it,”
My smile faded into a look of confusion. “W-what happened?” I stuttered, not wanting to imagine the worst case scenario— that she didn’t want to go with me.
“I’m worried because… you know… I’m radioactive. I could cause a whole scene at the ball or something…” she admitted, fidgeting with her fingers as she spoke.
“Aw, that’s okay. You know how to control it. You can do it at the ball, and you can do it during your radiotherapy project.” I shrugged slightly, nudging her shoulder gently.
Alithea smiled. “Thanks, that helped.” Her gaze drifted off into the distance, as she watched countless students passing by. “I wonder what 2000 is going to bring… I bet the New Year’s Eve celebration will be wild!”
“It’s only July,” I remarked with a chuckle. “You really think ahead, don’t you?”
“You calling me an over-thinker? Need I remind you that the dance is in August? A month away?”
“Touche…” I said, with a defeated sigh. “You win, Alithea.”
“1-0 then. By the way, how’s your sister?” she asked.
I frowned slightly at the mention of my sister. “She’s looking for a job as a college professor…”
“Oh, what if she joins here?” Alithea chirped enthusiastically. “That would be nice!”
“R-right… totally,” I answered, trying to sound positive. “Though, back to the topic of thinking ahead, any ideas on what to do for Christmas?”
“I dunno. I’ll probably just go home and spend time with my family. You?”
“Same. I’ve really missed the estate…”
“You and that estate…” Alithea mused, nudging me playfully. “Come on, time’s-a-wasting. We’d better return to the dorms.”
As we walked back to the dorms, I was filled with a sense of relief, because my main objective was complete — asking Alithea to the ball.
